Winston Reid on a free in the summer? Apart from being a Kiwi I can't say I've seen much of him.

Suarez not nominated for Ballon d'Or.

Now I am not saying he should win it but surely he should be one of the 23 nominees. The bite costing him here I think.

Yeah, he's obviously been left out because of the biting.

He probably ought to be included really. But if he was, he would surely stand a high chance of winning it, and FIFA are probably concerned about the prospect of having to give their most prestigious award to a player who's spent the last 4 months suspended due to him being a habitual biter of other people. Not good for image etc...

He'd have no chance of winning it. Of the two biggest trophies of the year he didn't even play in one and in the other bit someone before the first round was up.

I don't think he really should be nominated either. I mean I'm not advocating giving it to Mother Theresa but we need SOME kind of ethical standards for awards like this. He hasn't got through a season without racially abusing or biting someone in about five years.

He'd be a shoo-in for a top 3 place surely.

And yeah, ftr I'm generally in favour of him being left out, for the reasons you've given. But on playing-related considerations alone, I'd say he should be included.

Missed 4 months of the year due to misconduct and hasn't played a single minute of European football. Not a chance he deserves a nomination, and that's before you go into the ethics of the award as Uppercut has alluded to.

Well, despite the ban and all, I don't believe there are 24 other players in the world who have performed at such a consistently high standard in 2014. It's worth noting also that if playing European football is an important criterion for selection then James Rodriguez has hardly played any.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't most of Suarez's incredible form last year come in 2013? What are his actual numbers for 2014?

He wasn't the best in his position in the Premier League anyway last season IMO; not a chance he'd be a shoe-in for top 3 in the world.

The majority of his Premiership goals were scored in 2014.

Also, if Suarez wasn't the best player in his position in the Premiership last year, I'd be curious to find out who you think was.

Rodriguez being awesome in the WC naturally compensated his absence from the UCL.

Aguero.

In terms of strikers I'd also have Diego Costa easily ahead of Suarez for this year. Blokes like Benzema might have a case as well.

Should be an easy win for Ronaldo this year anyway. Has taken it to a level above the rest.
If not i'd like to know who it is.

The Germans were a very very good side but not one player really stood out for them enough to take this award ahead of Ronaldo.

As for Suarez, I can see why he was left out but not sure on pure football reasons you can leave him out of the top 23 in the world.

Diego Godin was ****ing robbed. None of the forwards in that list bar potentially Mario Götze scored goals that were as important as his. Given that Götze basically just got nominated because he scored the World Cup winner, you would've thought one of the best defenders this year would. What's Eden Hazzard done this year?
