A summer move is certainly more likely, and is probably for the best anyway. Apparently he'll be out injured until March, and so wouldn't have much time to make a big impact anyway. Getting him early in the summer so that he can get a full pre-season with the squad would probably be the wisest course.

Funnily enough, by waiting till deadline day we got him cheaper than we would've otherwise.

Real panic thinking that by Wenger :p
Risky strategy though. If someone like Man Utd had gazumped Arsenal on deadline day, as they quite conceivably could have done, and perhaps should have done, Wenger would have been up **** creek.

Spurs do that every year, and end up missing out on fourth by the two points they dropped in the games their new signings missed because they were ****ing around, but it still somehow gets spun as "Levy the master negotiator".

Nah get him now, get him settled into London/England and he's ready to be unleashed next season. If he can contribute this season then it's a bonus.

TBF I can think of at least three Arsenal players who'll be in Brazil wearing Jerry's white, short of injury.

Wenger reckons Gnarby can make it too, but that's a stretch too far for me.

Honigstein reckons he'll go.

They might want to cap him to prevent losing him to the Ivory Coast as well.

Needs to be in a competitive game for it to stick, doesn't it? Alex Bruce switched from Eire to Northern Ireland despite having played friendlies for the former.

Can't see Jerry risking him in an actual WC game just to spite the Ivorians.

Will be interesting to see if Gnabry starts in the matches against Bayern. Will be well up for it, knowing that a huge proportion of the viewing audience will be German. If he turns it on and makes an impact there and backs it up with some solid showings domestically I reckon he'll have more than an outside chance of inclusion in Germany's WC squad.

Indeed. IIRC Germany lost Schalke's Jermaine Jones to the USA because his 3 caps all came in friendlies.

And Lewis Holtby is ineligible for England because he's played about 8 competitive minutes for Germany.

Maybe they should take Wenger's perspective on left backs and grow their own like Gibbs, Cole, Traore. Or purchase young bargains like Silvinho, Clichy for peanuts.

I know there's a million of these things about bale out there...but this one made me smile

Haha, I particularly enjoyed the one about how they should have gone for "someone like Clichy".

Why on earth you'd want a player who was even remotely like Clichy is completely beyond me. He even looks gormless ffs, so not even his appearance can redeem him.

TBF Bale doesn't not look gormless.

Messi too, if it comes to that.

Footballing savants, the pair of them.

Oh yeah, sure. But they possess other redeeming features, such as talent. What I was getting at is that not only is Clichy really, really, really bad, but not even his physical appearance can redeem him (Jamie Redknapp makes up for his terrible punditry by being a nice bit of crumpet, for example, he at least is well turned out and nice to look at). There are literally no reasons I can see that anyone would want a player that resembles Clichy in any way whatsoever.

Tbf to him, he might actually be a decent bloke, and so I have nothing against him in that regard. But as a player? Ghastly.

Even thinking about him is annoying me. Arsenal have had some garbage defenders over the years, and others who were pretty dodgy at best, but I honestly find it hard to believe that Clichy's name doesn't come up more often when people try and come up with lists of worst Arsenal players in recent memory.

I mean Cygan was massively iffy, as was Senderos, Squillaci was terrible too, Silvestre was garbage, Eboue and Djourou despite promising starts also become hugely suspect, but I honestly think Clichy was no better than any of these, and in some cases he was several degrees worse. He was just lucky that there were always more obvious causes for concern in the teams he played in and his gaffes, the really big ones anyway, were relatively infrequent. This helped conceal the fact that he actually contributed nothing to the side for far longer than should have been allowed.

Nah, Clichy was **** at times and had a tendency to randomly slip over a lot which cost us at times but he was actually more than servicable for a great deal of his Arsenal career
