You can blame Thickie Waddle for that. For reasons best known to him, at 1-1 he decided to tell the world that England were controlling the game. Apart from anything else, it came as a shock to those of us who thought we were under the cosh. Beyond that, it was obviously tempting fate.

Balls-up by Robinson if Radio 5 are to be believed.

Need Israel to get soemthing against Russia & they're playing for pride, essentially.

Second goal was partly on Robinson, but the defender (Lescott?) should've reacted quicker to the spill.

Hey-ho. 8-)

Now that we know the England footie team really aren't very good after all, can we go back to meaningful club football?

FTR, Robinson was not to blame for the goal IMO, shot was travelling and too far away from him to hope that he'd hold it. And as for pushing it wider... that's not easy as it sounds because the ball direction is mostly determined by the angle of the shot.

Only seen goals - Rooney's goal was offside, Russia's penalty was a joke, and the other goal was fine. 1-0 to Russia, then.

My estimates of Euro 2008. Emboldened teams are qualified. Obviously with the slashes, teams will only qualify once :p, Won't be two Spains (thank god.).

Fairly sure Croatia aren't qualified. If they lose to Macedonia and England (highly enough, i.e. 3-0) and Russia do their job, Russia will have 27, England 26, Croatia 26, and England will be ahead on head-to-head.

So they're 99.5 % sure, but not there yet.

Btw, top seeds will be Austria, Switzerland, Greece and Germany. Spot the one people will not want to meet.

Disappointed Scotland couldn't beat Georgia. Either need to beat Italy or hope Italy draws their next two games.

arghhhhhhh what can you say. I still don't know how we England managed to lose that one, the entire MGS yesterday afternoon was in shock.

The penalty decision was pathetic the ref was nowhere near & it was plain to see he was tackled outside the box, but then again if they had scored from a free-kick that would have been a different story. But leading up to that goal you could tell England were going to concede geez just like againts Romania 2000, Brazil in WC 02, France & Portugal @ Euro 04 we score & start defending wayyyyyyyyy do deep & again it cost us. Even though if Gerrard had converted that sitter it could have helped.

England need a world-class foreign coach in their ranks who can get these blokes playing to their potential & be able to make solid tactical decisions in crunch situations, like yesterday after having very sedate first half then missing that sitter Gerrard should have been off the field for Lamps & SWP as well for Bentley he may have scored two goals againts average sides but was exposed again, pace but no final delivery this is why Beckham is still so important to England down the right, he may not have pace like the SWP, Lennon, Pennant but will give you that all important cross. Having a ball-winner like Hargreaves would have been very good yesterday especially where as Campbell had to make those brilliant interceptions Hargreaves would have killed it long before, even so with him injured McClaren should have thought of having a player like that for such a game in maybe Reo-Coker (instead of the useless Phil Neville or Alan Smith) who has been doing very well in that role for Villa this season. Maybe a more tactically sound manager would have made that choice.

Also with the performance of Stevie G which will obviously re-ignite the Lamps/Gerrard debate I'd say the idea that 4-4-2 is the only formation that can work for England needs to be rethought definately since againts stronger teams you are going to get found out with that system, l think a 4-3-1-2 formation would be the best combination for the side, with Barry the passing machine who could drift out wide if needed, Hargreaves the digger, Beckham/Gerrard to complete the mid-field trio with Rooney the playmaker & Heskey/Ashton supplying the physical & aerial threat up front alongside Owen.

------------------------------------------------------------------------JAMES---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RICHARDS------------------------------------------TERRY-----------------FERDINAND--------------------------------------------------COLE

-------------------------------------------------------------------------HARGREAVES---------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------BECKHAM/GERRARD------------------------------BARRY----------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------ROONEY-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------OWEN-----------------------------------HESKEY/ASHTON----------------------------------------------

Even if Cole one of Stevie G or Lamps can't start no biggie, we will have a superb bench. Look at spain Fabregas the & Alonso can't get a start & Raul isn't even in their squad & he is on fire at Madrid. England players have to be more flexible and open to new systems because otherwise we will continue witness performances like today on a regular basis whenever we play any decent to top-class side.

Back to the rant..........

It just kills me though to see our talented group up players just flopping on the international stage making the same mistakes over & over again. When you see teams like Greece winning Euro 2004, & South Korea getting to the 2002 WC semi's & an average German team (at least up until the last WC) doing so well on the international stage you got to think WTF have England been doing.

I wasn't old enough to witness the last time England missed a major tournament in USA 94, but not seeing us at Euro 2008 would be devastating. I feel for McClaren ATM he was getting the right balance of the side together in the last few games especially in mid-field & with senior blokes like Becks, Hargreaves, Neville, Hesky, Bridge, King coming back along with the many talented youngsters from the under-21's pushing for places things were looking good especially if everyone could have stayed fit.

But if England don't qualify i guess he will have to go since the the horrifc middle period the campaign especially those 3 games againts Macedonia were England just looked they didn't want to play, againts croatia were his 3-5-2 formation backfired (even though if you want to be leniant with him it was probably the best formation he could have gone with at the time), the draw in Israel all valuable points lost that we should have gotten especially that macedonia game & the consistent selection of Robinson.Yea the man had alot of clean sheets in the campaign but look at the sides he was playing againts the two games he concedes were againts the two best teams in the group, you just had to look at Robbo in goal this season to know that he should not have started.

Ah well hoping Israel can give Russia a hard time at home & hopefully alsomany of out injured players recover for Croatia clash & we can overcome them their. If i get tickets for that game hopefully my first trip to wemblely won't be a bad one.

Dire. If/when we fail to qualify, rather than looking at the refereeing decision/defeat last night, draw to Macedonia and Israel msut be considered. Piss-poor.
