You can when there is a big enough difference, like it's pretty clear someone like Schmeichel is better than Gerrard. Schmeichel is one of the best goalkeepers in the past decade or so and other countries would recognise it, only people subjected to the constant hype would think Gerrard is a top international quality player.

Seriously this Gerrard bashing is getting a bit annoying tbh, he's a very, very good player and this should be obvious to people who watch him often, it doesn't help when Rafa Benitez made him a right winger last season, he's unstoppable in the middle of the park.

call me biased but he is quality. i rate him better than lampard as every time i see lampard play he is woeful.gerrard is 1 million times bettr in the centre than the right.

Both over-rated, in fact the general standard of keeping in the world at the moment isn't a patch on what it was 10-20 years ago.
EDIT: In England, at least. And as for the other European giants... Barcelona have a crap keeper, Real Madrid have an over-rated keeper who tries to make every save he makes spectacular and punches everything, Milan have a crap keeper, and so on and so forth.

Haha, yeah pundits seem to go on and on about Cech being the best keeper in the world...in reality he really ain't that good imo.

I dunno probably the quality of keeping isn't as good as it was 10-20 years ago, since without a doubt no keeper except for Buffon comes close to matching Schimichel (spell check). I agree about England, but i guess you are being a bit harsh on keepers in Europe or worldwide, if i was to pick a 10 based on ability:
- Buffon
- Cech
- Casillas
- Reina
- Khan
- Lehmann
- Ricardo
- Vander Sar
- Coupet
- Given
Thats a pretty classy list. Obviously the likes of Khan, Lehmann & Van der sar aren't as good as 2-3 years ago given their age but they are still pretty solid once fit.

hmm about even for me, with Alex being the strongest defender within either Brazil or France.
No i'm not saying he, i mean its not impertive for a strker have his or Drogba's qualities i.e height to be able to counter strong defender like Ben Haim or Alex if you have pace like Cole & Young that i'll work just as effective.

Don't like the idea of comparing players who play in different positions. But if you want to argue the impact they have had by playing for their respective countries & clubs then yea the Brazilian is certainly better than Gerrard. Gerrard though would be ahead of the portuguese since he has had more consistent seasons for Liverpool compared to Ronaldo 1 last season although i guess Ronaldo has done better @ International level than Gerrard.

He was a monster 5 or 6 years ago.
I didn't really rate Cristiano till last season, so I wouldn't put him ahead of Gerrard, but if he keeps up the way he's going he definitely outshine Gerrard.
