*Official* English Football Season 2007-08

Heh, Everton 2-0 up, looking good, however still Howard just forced into a decent save an away goal as good as takes Fiorentina through given how long is left.

& T*ttenham join them. Big squeak from the stand-in captain. Could've won it for his team. PSV keeper a prize **** tho, it must be said.

A Brazilian who looks like a decent keeper, that’s refreshing.
Must say it’s good to see Pascal miss the decisive penalty that guy is a grade A **** - gives foreign footballers a bad name.

ESPN Gamecast commentary were flabbergasted at Jenas being given the penalty that couldn't won them the match, I assume he isn't the most confident of finishers?

I remember Jenas ****ing up a penalty a few years back playing for Newcastle in some crappy pre-season tournament in Asia. He went for the chip and it come out looking as stupid as this guy here. Although, I believe Jenas hit the bar but nevertheless he was royally roasted by his manager and the English media.

From the English clubs, Viola and PSV were nigh on exceptional with their placement and utter coolness.
TBH Everton's penalties weren't particularly terrible - if Yakubu's had been three inches to the right it would have been perfect and Frey pulled off a good save to deny Jagielka. Can't comment on the Spurs pens though.

Was watching both shootouts at once in the pub. Yakubu's i swear was in, but i couldn't explain why it bounced back out at first viewing. Chimbonda, dire. Everton's were all pretty decent.

Yeah in all fairness Everton weren't too shokcing actually, though you should still never miss a penalty as a highly paid professional.

Spurs were more woeful however - Jenas was never going to score just judging by the way he walked up, no conviction, and Chimbonda was simply dire.

Nah IMO, that was an inspired sale, however we do need a smiliar player to him, just one that helps the team more rather than himself.
Need a player like a fit Saha IMO.A van Nistelrooy type wouldn't work.
Agree with you both on this - RvN was an extraordinary pure finisher, but it's no coincidence in my mind that we've become a better, more free-scoring side since he left. It probably wasn't his fault and you can't argue with his goal return in five seasons with the club, but while he was there our whole attacking strategy was built around him. While he was prolific, it made us slower and more predictable, and cut down our attacking options across the park.

We do need a genuine centre forward to add strength and presence in the box when required, act as a target man and be the clinical finisher we don't have there at the moment, but going down the path of another RvN wouldn't be best for the team IMO. Perhaps, in Manucho, we already have the man we need? He scored on debut for Panathinaikos over the weekend.

Thoughts from the English readers of this thread on Stewart Downing? He's one player in the English national time I rarely hear or read about...
