If Sven doesn't want to pick Murphy, then I'd say Nolan and Bullard would be better calls than Smith and Richardson

Because he can neither hit a barn door nor control a football effectively. A lankier version of Emile Heskey with less pace.
And add the fact he is taller then most goal keepers so it is easy to to aim crosses and corners at him and he can head it in.

In saying that, that is what he is picked any paid to do.

He's having one of those games. Surely to Christ we've got enough about us to beat a ten-man Brum @ Highbury tho?!?
Is it me or is he one of the more under-rated players and especially goal keepers in the EPL? Everytime I have seen him play he looks like a quality player (and a former soldier to boot before he turned pro).

Just a shameless plug here, if anyone fancies a virtual flutter on any football matches check out the CW Moneymakers thread, where I'm the football bookmaker

Don't mind Kieran Richardson and Crouch particularly, as they're like the Ashley Giles of the football squad, but what the hell are Neville and Alan Smith doing there?
Difference is, Giles has actually contributed something to his team in his career - the England careers of Richardson and Crouch are both undeserved and so far unspectacular. Richardson's goals against USA Reserves prove nothing about whether or not he is good enough at international level, and Crouch hasn't even scored yet this season, so how that warrants international selection I have no idea. None of the four should be there, neither should Luke Young, Stephen Warnock, and Jermaine Jenas. Murphy should be in there, his exclusion is scandalous - he has been the Premiership's best midfielder this season, streets ahead of Gerrard for sure.

You can hardly make comments on Richardson's international career. He's not been around long enough to say he's been unspectacular. I do agree about Murphy though.

You can make comments about him not deserving being there, and if he plays left back tomorrow it will be the biggest joke since the Taylor reign.

well their has been a lot of talk who should play in central defence for England tommorow but looking beyond that towards the World Cup lets say all 3 Terry, Ferdinand & Campbell all have top seasons which 2 would you rather in the centre of defence for the tournament, for me its Terry & Campbell.

I want to say Rio but i cant those 2 are batter than him unfortunately, but on a positive note shows how strong our defence is....

I'm not altogether sure he's a worse option than a right-footed centre half to be honest.

Phil Neville would get my vote from the current squad, but where's Chris Powell? He's started well this year for Charlton & Sven's picked him before.

Giles has barely contributed towards wins, he's just a permanent fill-in player to an area where there's a complete lack of quality options. Crouch and Richardson are the same as Giles, they are selected because there's a complete lack of quality options as far as left sided players go and as far as 6 foot 6 (or whatever he is) aerial threats go.

Carragher's played left back a lot in his career, and first and foremost he's a defender, not a winger.

Powell's about 45 now isn't he?!!!

Oh really, so the 7 and 6 he took in the subcontinent in 00/01, and more recently the 6 vs NZ, the 2 9's vs WI plus his 5 this year at Edgbaston are all products of our imagination then?

There isn't a complete lack of left-sided options - Joe Cole, Downing, Wright-Phillips and Bridge can all play there - it just never seems like any of them play well when they play there, because Sven never a) gives them any service, or b) allows them to do anything with the ball once they get it other than pass it sideways. He seems to hate allowing wingers to run at players - inconvenient seeing as that's what wingers do best.

And who says every team needs a 6ft 7in striker? Since when did Brazil, Argentina, France or Italy play hoof-and-hope football? Sven will pick Crouch because it means he doesn't have to think of a way to incorporate someone else - you can guarantee England's tactics on Saturday are going to be long ball from minute 1, and if that doesn't work there won't be a backup plan, just like against NI.

At Edgbaston he nearly cost us the game after Australia threw wickets away, that was his contribution.
