Righhhht. And here was me thinking you actually had some footballing knowledge. Explain to me how Neville is overrated when the majority who don't play/know anything about football think he is a donkey anyway??? But i suppose you know better than every football manager in the land, and most players for that matter.
im sure you do as well, but thats besides the point, im not intrested in insulting you, so you can desist at that as well.

Anyway, there is very little goodness about gary nevilles game, he can tackle adequetely, but he cant pass for toffee, he charges at referees and moans childishly (worse than most) even if hes just gone and stamped on some guys leg, and if neville and ferdinand are sooo great, then please explain to me the awful state that is man utds defence.

Man Utd's defence is pretty decent, it's their midfield that's totally useless (and their goalkeeping of previous seasons). You're right about Neville's passing tho, he just punts the ball 80% of the time.

Im not the one slagging off a player with 10 years international experience. For a start Utd havent conceded this year. Had 19 clean sheets last year, conceding 26 in 38 games, the only reason we came 3rd was because of a lack of goals, so i wouldn't call that a terrible defence, just not Chelsea-esque, but then again what is. As for moaning and charging referees, 95% of players do it, its just more recognised and spoken of as Neville plays for "manure" as some people say, not that i'm defending that part of the game. Finally this is the same Neville who for 12 years has consistently been putting crosses on his overlaps onto the heads of Yorke, Cole, Sheringham, Van Nistelrooy etc??? Come again mate.

which incidentally is usually to a member of the other team, a defender in the modern day needs to have a lot more composure on the ball to be called truly decent imo.

never said i had a problem with his crosses, they are perfectly good, very good in fact, hsi passing is just atrocious. Look at it this way, how many of the top european sides defences would gary get into ? very very few imo, the rest of the team on the other hand...most of them would be able to get a place in any other major european sides starting 11, the fact that england have nobody better than neville (in svens eyes anyway, although sven has my full support) just gos to show that it is the one real weak link in englands team imho.

tbh i hate Manure and i hate Gary Neville, but he's not as bad as you're making out, i'd certainly rather him than carragher, especially given that carragher was never more than ok at full back, his form of recent has come from playing centre back

So a cross is not a pass??? There goes my 17years of football knowledge. I don't know many defenders who can do a crossfield switch 60 yards. More a pass of 10-20 yards is all that is required, see Bobby Moore. Silvestre certainly couldn't get into any team IMO, and when referring to Rio, well is one of the best defenders in the world so thats pretty much obvious. I don't know what sort of playmaking role u expect right backs to play but in my time of playing football it isn't the most complex of roles but what is required Neville does very well.

No worries mate, takes a lot more than that to wind me up!! :D I was just trying to say that the majority of defenders can't pass that well, which is why they aren't midfielders. Gary falls in that bracket. He can pass 15yds fine, tackle well, is good in the air and runs alot down the flanks, which is what a right back needs to do. For me he is one of the best around with Cafu the only right back head and shoulders above all the others in the game.

I challenge anyone to find a better option for right back than Gary Neville.

A problem we're about to have to cope with.

Phil, on the other hand....

As with any friendly played by England, we called it irrelevant long before the game.
Some one calling a match irrelevent does not necessarily mean so as shown in the world cup match. That was my point of reference of the world cup match.

Any match in a competition has some meaning towards the competition, so it can't be irrelevant.

An England friendly has no meaning and so when we call it irrelevant, it's because it is.

Put it this way - if England are playing a qualifier, I will move heaven and earth to go and watch the game (even if it involves driving 40-odd miles before the game as I am doing this Saturday)

If it's a friendly, chances are I won't be bothered to watch it even if it is on terrestrial TV and I only have to walk 3 metres to watch it.

That is what is called irrelevant.

Well that depends on the supporters/players for any other respective nation. In England such is the way with Eriksson and the players, friendlies end up being trivial and pointless.
So what is the best around it then?

Pick a similar side everytime (barring injuries) and use no more then 3 subs and in the case of the match against Denmark, give Defoe a full game since he is going to be starting with Rooney so they can get an understanding together (lets face it they have never played with each other at club level) and not go on a trip like to the US?

I have heard suggestions of bringing back the Home Nations Tournament (last held in 1984?) and it would be more beneficial for countries like Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland (at least the players would have some movitation for playing well and wanting to win) and perhaps to some extent England. At least then he will be forced to treat it more seriously.

Thoughts?

Glen Johnson potentially could but he isn't getting a go at Chelski and IMO he and Mourinho missed out on a good chance to send out on loan to get some more experience now that the transfer window has closed.

I understand your point of view clearly as there is not any thing in terms of competitions at stake in these matches. But competition is not the only thing which I keep in mind to call a match relevant or irrelevant. This is why some friendlies like an Inida Pakistan match may mean some thing to me. We have different criterias to judge relevent and irrelevent matches.

Cheers.
