Which is why he has picked the likes of Stewart Downing, Andy Johnson, David James (especially when he was in the old Div 1), Keiran Richardson (remember he was at West Brom when he was first picked) and many more?
Downing and Johnson were token selections and they didn't get anything near a fair run. Downing should have around 10 caps by now - but he doesn't because he plays for Middlesbrough and the vegetable would rather screw the balance up and try countless right footers on the left wing. Richardson was picked on a tour to USA when virtually none of the normal squad went.

What chance do players like this have come a World Cup squad?

Surely the fact that Andy Johnson was ever picked in the first place, thereby becoming the first specialist penalty taker to play up front for England and gaining more caps than he had any right to given his hideous lack of ability, shoots that down a little.

Yea I know he's crap, but was just refuting their example.

Someone like Downing however could make a big difference, but he's never been given the chance.

Downing hasnt had 10 caps for England because he has had injury problems in the last year and Joe Cole has put in a number of good perfromacnes on the left side of midfeald. As far as im concerned he has solved the England left side problem.

He hasn't had 10 caps because of the reasons I mentioned, Downing has still been available for most of the England fixtures over the past year or so.

Joe Cole can play on the right wing, Downing on the left, Beckham can go get another misspelt tattoo or hair cut.

hmmm that should possibly be the case in a couple of years or even sooner although i Aaron Lennon is a very good prospect and id like to see him in the side at some point. but i still think Beckham has a good World cup in him though

For a start I don't see why Eriksson can be criticised for not picking someone who's been injured for the majority of the last season.

Secondly, Joe Cole has proven himself to be the best current option for that role, so who cares if he is left footed.

I heard a rumour (and it's very probably horse manure, but hey) that one of the questions that the FA comittee who were interviewing Messers O'Neill, McClaren, Curbishley & Scolari asked was if they could guarantee that Beckham would remain as captain because the FA couldn't afford the lost revenue from shirt sales in the far east! :-O

WRT that own goal, it was nearly (though not quite) bettered by our right-winger on Sunday.

They got a corner. it came to him, and he tried to put it back over our bar. He didn't quite get the required height however, and volleyed it with some power into our top corner. Quality own goal. :D

Good thing we were losing anyway and it made no difference.

How has he proven himself to be the best current option if one alternative (Downing) hasn't even played for England for over a year (or 10 games - and no Downing hasn't been injured for every one of those)?

He has played too well to justify being dropped - therefore he is the best option.

Just because someone doesn't justify being dropped does not mean they're the best option, especially when they're better in a different position and the incumbent right wing player has been treading water for the past 3-4 years.
