County cricket in England is a poorer standard comparatively to Aus but when you have 18 teams as opposed to 6 that's going to be the case. No real surprise that Hughes(top runscorer in T20) and Starc(top wickettaker in t20) etc have been dominant.

Maybe in the past but imo not anymore at all, Shield cricket even with only 6 states is pretty poor atm hence the quality of players that are coming out of it.

Hughes and Starc are both international players and are both in decent form, hence why it's not a surprise they have done well, there are others that do come over that don't though. I'd be a bit more impressed if they were doing this in something other than hit and giggle, where has we've seen before if you can get you're eye in for a couple of weeks you can smack a few runs. Although tbf to Starc he's bowled well for us for his first time over here in England, in all formats and should develop into a good international bowler.

I'm not sure how pointing to those two's success in Twenty20 means anything in the grand scheme of things when comparing State and Shield cricket, ateotd they are international players playing against domestic cricketers, seen as a lot of England players don't play at all or very little.

Shah and Wright also did well in their equivalent tournament, how much should we read into that, other than decent players do well domestically sometimes.

Time to look at those two D/L revisions against the Jayadevan system:

Northants were so utterly buggered that VJD would also have set very little - 25 in 5 overs. Northants were 31/4 off 8.3 overs, having used 50% of their total resource (43% overs, 40% wickets). VJD tells us that the target runs in an 8.3 over chase is 56.1%, so Northants' effective 8.3 over score = 56.1/50 * 31 = 34.782. Gloucester have 5/8.3 = 10/17 = 58.8% of these overs remaining; this means they should be expected to score 71.3% of their effective target, so 0.713 * 34.782 = 25 to win. It'll be tough to argue any higher target with any logic that you can extrapolate to another score - teams are not usually 31/4 in 8.3 overs.

At 104/0 off 9 overs, however, Sussex have used 45% overs, losing 0% wickets, which the VJD table tells us is 36.3% of the final total. Target runs in a 9 over chase is 58.6%, giving an effective 9 over score of 58.6/36.3 * 104 = 167.89. Surrey have 5/9 = 55.5% of that chase; meaning they should be expected to score 68.5% of that total. 0.685 * 167.89 = 116 to win in five overs. If I can read, because it's bloody confusing and I've spent three days in a tent in Wales.

Draw your own conclusions...

Hmm I spent 5 days in a tent in Staffordshire (near Stone) less than 2 weeks ago, but I wouldn't want to read that lot. The target stuff sounds a bit odd - having a target runs for a 9 over chase when it's a 5 over chase and then simply using the ratio. Given Sussex' projected score is 287 (rounded up) I can see why a 5 over target would be high, but 116 seems a bit excessive. If you had a projected score of 200 then a 5 over target would be 81/82 - I don't remember anyone touching that sort of rate in a shortened thrashabout but I've seen plenty of 200s.150 gives 61/62. Forget how it all gets rounded.

Borthwick running through Worcestershire. It's almost as if you have to bowl him for the guy to take wickets...

Durham will probably make Gareth Andrew look like a world beater with the bat now mind and end up conceding a lead.

Woo first innings lead. Could be a turning point in the season if they can actually back it up with a better-than-comically-inept batting display and weather allows for a result.

Bloody Lancashire trust them to have collectively remembered how to bat the last couple of days, from a England perspective we could really have done with KP getting a couple of innings here, doesn't look like that's likely unless Surrey bat like morons tomorrow.

Bell managed to get himself a half century for Warks, I wonder why Trott didn't play for them or has he just fancied a bit of a rest.

**** day down in Southampton, only got through 26 overs and managed to lose 3 early wickets.

Strauss & KP playing well, although KP seems to have forgot it's a first class game, 50 off 42 balls and Strauss has now got his ton.

Good knock by Root scored 80 out of 140, shame no one else has bothered to turn up.

KP on to 70 off 66 now and De Bruyn has 66 - local lads making good at Guildford. :D

Yet another makeshift opening pair though - Burns and Ansari. Perhaps they just draw the names from a hat?

Great, that's exactly what we need. KP smashing it to all parts and getting himself into top form right before the Tests. Plus, Strauss has already made a ton. Despite all the optimism I can muster, things are looking ominous.

Great effort by Joe Root, just brought up his ton out of a total 187.
Top effort. Ticking all the right boxes as far as being the long term replacement for Strauss as an opener so far. Needs to back it up with another good season next year though in Division 1.

Yes defo wouldn't want Root brought up too early, like you say at least another full season before we can start talking him up.

And Pietersen gets his 100, with a 6 off Kerrigan. 92 balls, 3 sixes.
Been listening to it on BBC radio and from by the sounds of it he's batting like a man on a mission, played all his favorite shots and treated all the bowlers for the most part with disdain.
