Actually Rik, if I remember correctly he didn't have a choice in the matter - the playing conditions were changed to allow a full substitute where someone was released by England after the match started.

I think the captain's consent only refers to substitue fielders.

As it is, this is 12 a side (or 13 on 12 now!) so wouldn't be governed by FC rules.
Well it wasn't a rule then and he allowed it. Hastened the change I suppose.

Understandible, but nonetheless a shame.
Wonder if CricInfo would have covered it had it been FC? I've seen them cover joke-games before (Sixes, ACB\CA Chairman's-XI games, etc.) but it does seem strange.
They covered Carib Beer games, did they not?
They only posted a scorecard hours after the close of each day's play. Therefore they gave this game more coverage.

Wasn't that the game some bloke hit a ton and he returned mid-game to replace him?

I'm fairly sure the rule came in in the pre-season - if it didn't then I don't see why Fleming would've agreed - it's a bit stupid of him IMO.

Cricinfo reported that the England/Jamaica match turned into a farce because of the way England treated it.

Jamaica became dis-interested and as a result hardly provided any challenge.
I doubt they would have anyway looking at some of the averages & matches played in that team...which obviously is not the full strength Jamaica side anyway.

Considering England only have 6 days of cricket (3 now) b4 the start of back to back test matches, you can hardly blame them for wanting to give as many players as they could time out in the middle.

No I don't think it was that game. In fact I'm not sure if it was Kirtley. I'll have to look it up.

I had a look, and there was a game where Kirtley replaced Hutchinson against Kent, but I cannot for the life of me remember who it was got a ton then got replaced by Kirtley!

Aha, well I do!

Kevin John Innes

It was his debut 100 as well!

The reason why I say I'm not sure if it was Kirtley is because it occured when Fleming was playing regularly in the CC side, and he was hardly regular in the last few years (especially last year when I'm pretty sure he had retired).

Any thoughts on starting XIs for the 1st test. My Windies side would be as follows:

Gayle
Devon Smith
Sarwan
Lara
Chanderpaul
Dwayne Smith
Jacobs
Mohammed
Best
Collymore
Washington

The top 7 pretty much pick themselves, with Dwayne Smith's selection now pretty much certain after his performance in the Carib Beer Semi (century and 3 or 4 wkts).

Not sure about Mohammed being the 1st choice spinner, but I think a spinner should be included. Sanford was the one really bad selection in the 16 in my opinion and from what I've read about Washington I'd chuck him in ahead of Edwards, who needs to improve his accuracy significantly from the SA series before he returns.

I remembered it was a debut ton, but not who got it :(

Good point with Fleming, that probably settles it once and for all - it wasn't last season!

No. The Matthew Sinclair who represented Jamaica is Jamaican, a wicketkeeper and nowhere near as good a batsman.

I wouldn't put Washington in there. I'm not sold on him yet. He's played one season with decent success, not as though he's been amazing. Yes, he may have bowled well, but so did Taylor last season, and IMO he clearly wasn't ready for Test cricket. I'm also not sure that playing Mohammed at Sabina is a good move. I don't see him doing well. Aside from that I'd have to agree. Dwayne Smith has done enough to be persisted with.

Best good enough for number 9?

In Trinidad, Guyana and St Johns I would play Dave Mohammad and perhaps in Bridgetown he might get consisdered.

I wondered that myself, and if you click the cricinfo link, it says it is... but the scorecard said he was the 'keeper, and I think I figured it out some other way as well that it wasnt him (conflicting intials or something..)

Presumably you'd go for Sanford and Fidel then, from the 16 selected?

He's made a couple of 30+ scores this season I think and made a few runs on debut against Australia.

I 'd pick a spinner if only for variety's sake and because England will probably be more comfortable against pace. Also, it's not as if there are 4 pace bowlers crying out for selection. The fact is that there are no proven test class bowlers in the Windies squad.

I think I'm right in saying that Matt Sinclair is a wicketkeeper as well as a batsman. Seem to remember him taking the gloves in an emergency for my local club when he was the overseas player.

He also bowled quite well too. :)
