Is Love not up to it then?
Not in my estimation.

Admittedly I only included him because I was struggling to think of someone other than Ed Smith to name as a show pony.

Cheers,

Mike

batty picked up 5 wickets??!!!thats a surprise i thought he was useless.... what does that make ashley giles who got 2 wickets?
i say go for an all pace attack with anderson!!

I've all along said I don't see the point of playing 5 seamers.

the way he's bowling Giles would be lucky to kep his spot, but I bet he will.

I'd be tempted by Collingwood istead of him.

I suggested this earlier in the thread.

West Indies will be fielding potentially their best attack of the series (i.e. they've finally jettisoned Sanford) so more batting depth would be prudent and I guess Giles is unlikely to find much assistance from the Kensington Oval wicket.

I'd guess that Batty's haul had more to do with inept batting/pitch conditions than anything else. Plenty of apparently mediocre spin bowlers have excellent figures in West Indies first class cricket.

That's a bold claim.

What about Ed Smith or Martin Love?

Cheers,

Mike, not mentioning Ramprakash
But are they as technically sound as Daren Ganga? I can't think of any faults in Ganga's technique. His problem is purely mental.

No they arent nearly as technically sound as Ganga... They have more application/dominance tho...

Will be interesting to see Englands line up, although they will probably stay the same Jones has put alot of pressure on Read and in all honesty should replace him. Giles is under pressure too, not from Batty (although been the bias worcestershire supporter i am, id love to see him get a game) but from Anderson. Although with reports that the Barbadian Pitch takes spin (if west indies manage to make it to day 5  ) he'll probably get the nod.

Yes, that's exactly what he has been doing, but some people look at the wicket column and immediately decide he's not bowled well.
Yeah, the wickets he keeps getting when overstepping but not being called (V SA * WI). Real unlucky

Wait, a few days back you were saying they shouldn't pick young people for the hell of it. Now you're saying don't pick an older players because it's a backwards step.

If there anything that isn't a backwards step?
Ok, I might have put my right foot in my mouth but here goes:

I said there is no point picking young players who havent done anything to justify it, I by all means not against doing it if they have the performances to back it up.

Isn't that how the Aussies get all theirs anyway - especially Brett 'Mr No-ball' Lee?

the england squad for the one day series in the WI has been announced.a few surprises in there:

Squad
Michael Vaughan (Yorkshire, capt)
James Anderson (Lancashire) - he'll be part of the starting lineup dont you worry abt that. this is a real good chance for him to prove himself.
Gareth Batty (Worcestershire)- seriously how many games is this guy gonna get in the series?i think they could have gone for a specialist batsman instead.
Ian Blackwell (Somerset)- dont they ever forget about him???
Rikki Clarke (Surrey) - decent player good chance
Paul Collingwood (Durham) - finally we'll see him bat!
Andrew Flintoff (Lancashire)- most economical bowler, needs to prove himself with the bat
Ashley Giles (Warwickshire)- so we have 3 spinners for the ODI series?dont think he deserves a game unless the pitch turns square
Darren Gough (Essex) - finally da man is back!!
Stephen Harmison (Durham) - hard to see how he could have been left out after 7-12
James Kirtley (Sussex)- well im sure all u james kirtley fans will be quite happy, and why not?
Anthony McGrath (Yorkshire)- dont they ever learn?the guy cant bowl bat or field!has he ever impressed the selectors in the coloured kits??or for that matter even in tests?
Chris Read (Nottinghamshire) - i would have prefered a better batsman than a better keeper for ODIs but i guess they wanna stick with read for the future
Andrew Strauss (Middlesex)- dont know much abt him yet but it looks like hes going to play every game because he and tresco are the only openers(unless vaughan....)
Marcus Trescothick (Somerset)- this is the first time im saying this...he deserves to be part of the ODI squad.

Fantastic news about Gough - still England's talisman.

Interesting inclusion regarding Steve Wayward-Harmison too - much of this must be down to him having the 'evil eye' over the Windies at the moment.

I disagree on the batting - since his move to 5, he's been really very good indeed - don't get albeit briefly, ranked number 1 for nothing (he's about 20 with the bat as it is anyway!)

Thats quite funny  What are they going to send for Irani to bat at three if he gets injured??? lol

And tooextracool, Anderson has already proved himself... He just needs to rediscover that form...
