But surely, that's what they are there for and so you can't take them out of the equation.
My point is to derrail the attempts to disregard the potency of the West Indian batting order, not to disregard the efforts of Thorpe and Butcher.

He might not have contributed run wise but he stayed in for a long time and put some pressure on the Windies bowlers(who are woefully inexperienced i might had in their defence).

That's a very important point. Lara, Sarwan and Chanderpaul have the ability and experience to play the way their side needs them to play, and the rest of the team are attuned to playing one-day cricket, which, dare I say it, suits the Caribbean exhibitionist more than the more intellectual version of the game which many, many Caribbean cricket supporters know to be the real Test.

But to me, the difference between the teams over the weekend has been the bowling. Flintoff seems to be the only England bowler who can restrict batsmen to under a run a ball, which isn't meant as pimping for Freddy but as serious concern about the rest.

That said, I still can't get over that flicked six by Dwayne Smith on Saturday. The day when it occurs to him that learning enough about leaves and defensives would give him even more opportunities to play shots like that is one which the rest of the world's bowlers hope never dawns.

Cheers,

Mike

Ace, thanks mate. When CricInfo says a match will start at 13:35GMT, does that mean that's when the players will be on the field, or does it mean something more like flipping the coin? Or does DST have something to do with it? When I'm at work I can't check this stuff any other way, so it'd be nice to know. Thanks again, though. Finishing work early today so I'm off... into the wet rain for an hour on a bus until I finally sit down on my couch. I love Britain, I really do. ;)

It says BST which is British Summer Time ie GMT +1.

We are currently on British Summer Time so game starts in 3 mins. :)

Coin has already been flipped - Michael Vaughan won and elected to field. Probably a sensible move considering that all the previous matches in the series have been won by the team chasing. Ideally the first ball will be bowled at 13:35 GMT, which is... right now.

Interestingly enough, no talk at all of the match since its start.

West Indies up to a competitive total due to Sarwan's second ODI hundred. Congratulations to him on a very mature innings under pressure. Also deserving mention is Dwayne Smith. I really didn't think he had it in him, but he did bat extremely well with great restraint.

Darren Gough bowled well for the most part and finished with a useful 1/45 from 10 overs, his last in international cricket?

Small mention of Gayle too. He looked quite good at the crease.

Much will depend on whether Dillon can get an early wicket or two with the extra bounce which this pitch seems to have. Should be quite interesting.

Supposedly a 300+ pitch, but then again this is england and not australia we're talking about so anyhting could happen! Slightly optimistic on the england front though, hope best is nice and wayward!

The pitch was said to a 320par pitch, but Michael Holding was disagreeing with that from the start. The outfield is not as quick as St. Lucia and it has a bit more bounce than St. Lucia. Therefore I agree with the commentators when they said that 260-270 is about par.

Thought that sounded a bit off because the windies batsmen didn't seem massively prolific (apart from Sarwan) and i think we'll struggle to get that because of our weaker batting line up.

have to wonder why clarke bowled 7 overs despite getting hammered. his job was already done when he got the wicket of lara...perhaps trescothick or colly should have been given a bowl
