Great start for England. Lets hope when i wake up i find we pushed on and bowled them out for under 150. But knowing England they'll scrap to half decent 250 or so :@

I must say as a Sri Lankan cricket fan I was quietly relived when Mubarak failed. He has shown at every junction that he does not belong on a cricket field. Surely the Muppets cannot seriously ever consider selecting this joker again.

Amazing stuff from Hoggard. He was pretty good when he came to India and he is doing it again in the sub-continent. That is especially impressive since the conventional wisdom is that in order to succeed in the sub-continent, fast bowlers need pace in the air. Hoggard must be one of the best medium-pacers (i.e. slower than fast-medium) ever.
Nah, to describe Hoggard as slower than fast-medium would be inaccurate.

In any case, dunno who it was that said 90mph pace through the air was a prerequistite for subcontinental success. It's always been swing that's the key - more often reverse than conventional, but this has been an excellent ball which has really swung conventionally from the 4th delivery onwards.

The stereotype generally tends to be that the pitches negate seam-reliant bowlers, and are an absolute graveyard for those 90mph merchants due to the heat.

Have thought that for most of the last 3 years TBH.

He might get dropped sometime in the near future, but he'll be back.

Can the two wicketkeepers make it to Lunch?

Jeys, this Prasanna Jayawardene's not bad to watch, even if he don't score that many.

Indeed. I don't think the bloke has a fan in the world. I imagine his own mother would scramble for the remote control as he strides out to the wicket.

Yes, thankfully. He's not too bad, certainly looks pretty plucky today. I still have a question mark of his place in the team, particularly with Kaushal Silva coming on the way he is.

Think the shot after that ball I made that comment on (beautiful cover-drive off Sidebottom) explains why really - was a shorter ball, never there for the repeat shot, but he still aimed it again. Swished and missed this time, but could easily have nicked it and presumably will have done many times.

I would say that fast-medium means around 85- 87 mph while Hoggard seems to be in the low 80's.

As for pace in the air, that is something that Imran often stresses. It does make sense in that obviously a fast, full ball is much less affected by a slow pitch. Shoaib is a good example of a bowler who uses pace, changes in pace along with reverse swing to get wickets on dead pitches.

PJ is a decent Player, but i dont think he will score heavily which makes selecting a complete bunny at number 6 a big joke.

Hmm, nah, would say 85+ is "fast" myself TBH, 80-85 would be fast-medium, 75-80 medium-fast. No way to put exact measures on what paces someone's bowling, though, as these things aren't the same every ball.

Yeah, naturally. But bowling full is no use unless you swing it, even if you do bowl at 92mph.

Doubt it TBH, but you never know.

A few close-ish shaves in the session so far already. One top-edged sweep just out of reach of Vaughan at square-leg, a couple of edges that have fallen short of fielders \ just missed the stumps. Can't shake the feeling that one might go to hand before all that long, and Hoggard back on now too.

But they've gone well so far. Don't think I'd ever tire of Sangakkara, and as I said earlier, this Pras Jayawardene is a pretty damn attractive batsman too.

Well I don't know what that was missing. Shouldn't have been any hesitation there, that was as out as they come.

MSP ripping it plenty on the opening day, just like Giles did last time.
