True. Even before DRS, umpires were giving out more lbws in 2006 than they were in say 1996. Still I think at least Panesar is capable of winning a test match on the 5th day with a large target to defend. I mean I feel he's more of a matchwinner than someone like Vettori who gets complimented on his bowling but never seems to be able to run through a lineup. With Giles or Croft I never felt they could do that either; Tufnell is a slightly different case, he had more talent than Giles or Croft but he had too many attitude problems and was equally incompetent with the bat and in the field as Panesar.
Damned by faint praise. I don't think Panesar is much of a match-winner unless the pitch starts out already helping spin bowlers, like just gone in the UAE and then almost any decent spinner is capable of being a match-winner. If you were on a good pitch with a decent batting side and you were running short of time to force a result then Panesar would be one of the last people I'd want bowling for England - in that big chase India pulled off against England Panesar was just absolutely toothless and that's the sort of thing I'm talking about. I'd rather have Patel to be honest because he'd at least throw it up there and have a go. If you were on a result pitch which favoured spinners then that's more something that would involve Panesar.

As a SL fan I am more worried about Finn than Bresnan.
Agreed

I also heard from an extremely reliable source that Bresnan is still injured and that the only reason he is on tour is because he offered to pay his own air fare and play for free if the ECB doubted him

You obviously didnt watch the matches in the UAE as 2/3 pitches werent great for spin bowling

England's batting was just ****

Fact is that this last test is the only game out of the last 5 (tour match included) where Swann has bowled better than him and that was only in the 2nd innings

Wow, stunned at the result tbh, when I left for dinner the other night England were 210/4 and seemed odds on to win. BTW, will England lose their number 1 ranking if they get white-washed in a second series in a row?

What is it with the media love-in with Bopara? Sick of articles like this implying he's hard done to:

Sri Lanka v England 2011-12: England batsmen: The replacements | Cricket Features | Sri Lanka v England | ESPN Cricinfo

He's had over 100 games for England and he has an atrocious record in all formats. He was rubbish last year at county/A-team level particularly when the spotlight was on him. If he was a ginger northerner they'd have been getting the pitchforks out a long time ago.
cricinfo did the same last year when they had Bopara as a nailed on certainty for the Sri Lanka series.

Haha I remember that. I also remember the article about the "shock inclusion of Morgan, over Bopara who was said by many as the set replacement to fill the role" - well, no ****, because you were the ones who kept saying it!

Yep, next time someone posts an interesting stat which will magically appear on Cricinfo shortly after we all need to mention in that thread just how ****e Bopara is - a guy who bottled every opportunity to earn a place on merit and has played more matches for England than Trott or Bresnan. Maybe then it will get through to them.

I love how Morgan was a "shock" inclusion despite:

  • Playing all of England's home Tests in 2010, first as a replacement for Collingwood who was rested, then as a replacement for the injured Ian Bell
  • Touring Australia as the reserve batsman
  • Scoring a massive hundred (IIRC 193) for the Lions against the touring Sri Lankans.
