when did poms take over the #1 ranking, if it was after the indian series, would that make them the first #1 team to not even win a match while holding the ranking?! assuming they lose this one, some kind of record!
took over after 3-0 in the Indian tour, so they've won one match as number 1

Jimmy would be well advised not to twitter in the near future, given that his immediate thoughts must involve wondering wtf he bothers given the lack of support with the ball and the inevitable ****-up from the batters.

EDIT
Cue Bres making the break-through. Boycs reckons it was slipping down leg, but neither of us are complaining.

That should have been flicked for four. Missed a straight one.

Bresnan looking good though. Lost a ****load of weight as well. Can't believe Sri Lanka dropped Chandimal.

Jimmeh's had reasonable support with the ball most time, we've bowled well this Winter. Yet it's hard to get enthusiastic here, any score over 300 will probably give the Lankans a comfortable first innings lead.

Good stuff from Bresnan... here's hoping they have a bit of a collapse. It's probably just the matches I've happened to see but I don't get what's meant to be so amazing about Matthews.

He's got an impressive FC record, although I don't know much about Sri Lankan domestic cricket and the standard, and I think they view him as future captaincy materiel. Obviously his bowling is also useful when he's fully fit.

Yeh, I was only thinking back to the 1st innings in the first test here tbh. I know that Swann was immense in their 2nd innings last time. And it's not that we've bowled badly - we simply lack penetration in these conditions. Which wouldn't matter so much if the batters weren't dead set on playing like amateurs.

Rankings don't come into affect till the end of the series, so while technically we were number 1 during the Oval test, we weren't officially.
yeah but still...it doesn't seem right to say england didn't win match as number 1 cause i mean they did, for me anyway

but then it was only against india

England have kept it pretty tight tbf, but we often see fielding sides start to flag after tea (especially when it's as hot as this) so it wouldn't be surprising if Sri Lanka make 100+ in the final session.

Fine bowling from Jimmy - deserved better.

EDIT
Ditto plus some - three times past Mathews' bat and Jayawardene missed by Strauss.
