Gutted that I missed this match, was down in Hawera for the weekend. Two things:

How many talkback callers, hosts, newspaper journalists etc look like fools now? Also will the likes of Milmow be held to account for the dumb things they've said this summer?

My guess is many and no.

Was (obviously) at the game yesterday, and regardless of the result, the game was piss poor. McCullum missed at least two catches behind the stumps that could have cost NZ on another day. Hopefully his quickfire 40 odd will give him the confidence for a faultless performance next game. Some great bowling from Martin, Broad and Styris was worth the entry fee, but other than that it was a yawn-fest.

The moment that woke me up from my stupor was when Styris was somewhat prematurely named player of the match (in a bizarre theme which seemed to be continuing from the votes that kept coming his way in the 20:20 competition) only to be out for a duck about 5 minutes later. Chris Martin should feel gutted for missing out on the award.

Oh... and for you Phlegm, if I see Millmow soon, I'll ram a few copies of the Dominion Post down his throat for you.

We look set to be unchanged on Tuesday...hope we can turn things round, big time :(
The batting performance cannot hopefully not be a great deal worse! Even though we could not adjust to a pitch that suited the Kiwi bowlers perfectly, maybe a touch more attacking intent may be necessary, a la Ryder and McCullum.

That is what we have Mustard there for, and while he was understandably caught in a quandry with wickets falling constantly, he is the one that must attack the NZ attack.

I'm pleased the team will not be changed around, it was hopefully a one-off poor performance and it would be a little premature for us to start chopping and changing.

Personally I don't think Bopara is doing anything in the side. Is there any real point selecting a specialist batsman at #7? Sure, he may be able to score a good 30* when England collapse around him, but is he actually helping the side? Would rather have Mascarenhas at #7, but he's been troubled by pace in the past.
If all are fit England best ODI XI IMO would probably be:

Trescothick
Bell
KP
Colly
Shah
Flintoff
+ - keeper spot up for grabs still
Mascarenhas
Swann
Broad
Anderson

So you can say Broad is keeping Freddie's position warm. Mascarenhas for me shouldn't bat in the top 7i don't think his batting is that good although he can smash them, plus the fact that no other player really is pushing for a place that is better than Bopara.

In regards to the initial comment, I thought gettingbetter was wanting to replace a bowler with a bowler. Still, I'd rather have Broad in the ODI side at the moment than Anderson. As with above, Anderson's 2007 wasn't as good as most seem to think, while Broad's was marginally better. Combine that with the fact that Broad has outbowled Anderson on the tour and offers more with the bat.
I don't see what made Anderson ODI bowling in 2007 questionable from my recollection, without Freddie he is England best ODI bowlers hands down.

I'd prefer us to be skittle in 20 overs than see us bat out almost a full 50 to score such a low score...yes Mustard must attack more. There are almost certainly keepers out there who can grind an innings out better than him, and as you say, he needs to be hitting boundaries and attacking

Yes I mean we are obviously not aware of the instructions Mustard receives, but I think he should be given a licence to play his shots, and while the pitch the other did not look conducive to such strokeplay, NZ openers showed you could play in that way. Also, one thing that should be mentioned was how well the NZ bowlers performed.

Bit dissapointed that Styris got man of the match over Martin. They had almost identical figures, but it was Martin that did the initial damage and setup up the match for the Kiwis.

Was having a discussion with NZTailender on MSN a couple of nights ago about this, I opted for

Trescothick
Cook
Bell
Pietersen
Collingwood
Flintoff
Read
Mascarenhas
Swann
Broad
Sidebottom

Thought, TBF, Read hasn't performed at ODI level, nor has Cook, but both have good domestic records. Reckon Mascarenhas and Swann would keep things tight, Flintoff and Broad to pick up wickets, and Sidebottom to combine both. At this stage I just think Anderson has a tendency to be too erratic. Bopara is wasted batting down at #7, and he's not better than Bell/Pietersen/Collingwood so he doesn't make it.

So you can say Broad is keeping Freddie's position warm. Mascarenhas for me shouldn't bat in the top 7i don't think his batting is that good although he can smash them, plus the fact that no other player really is pushing for a place that is better than Bopara.
I can see room for both Broad and Flintoff, and I think Bopara should be the one to be dropped (provided he isn't performing well), when Flintoff returns from injury.

I don't see what made Anderson ODI bowling in 2007 questionable from my recollection, without Freddie he is England best ODI bowlers hands down.
I wouldn't say 'hands down', aside from the fact Anderson has played more games, I'd say him and Broad are roughly equal. If Sidebottom and Swann continue bowling like they have in their careers to date, both will be far superior to either. Anderson in 2007 was good, nothing more.

Swann is dire, he's just another one of those average players who won't be able to cut it at International Level.

Jamie Dalrymple was fairly decent, why isn't he playing?

What do you base you judgement of Swann on? Dalrymple was treated poorly by the selectors and captain. Rarely had a role to play in ODI games, usually under-bowled and batted too low to be effective.
