You guys have a lot of confidence in Peter Fulton or whichever guy we pick then.

Guptill is dire at batting in tests, but he's possibly the best fielder in the world. If we're going to have **** openers we might as well have **** openers who can catch (or bowl - Cribb to demand Tastle).

Guptill doesn't get injured = Guptill/Fulton
Guptill gets injured = Flynn/Fulton, with the small possibility of McCullum reconsidering his move down the order.

In the last two ODIs he's bowled the full ten overs for 46 runs, and 42 runs. If he can do that every game I'd take that, even if he's not taking wickets.
He can get by with that if he also regularly scores 25(20) and takes a difficult catch or runs someone out imo.

We have Elliott, NcCullum, Franklin, Munro and Ellis that all want to bat a bit and bowl a bit and perform those vital 'bits and pieces' roles. Potentially Neesham and Anderson some time soon too. There's surely only enough space for 2-3 of those, max.

What are NcCullum and Franklin's ODI numbers in last couple of years? From memory I think they should be reasonable for both.
Yeah what SM said. Needs to up his game with the willow for that to be a fair return.

I know Guptill/Fulton was first choice for SA, but I think Flynn's recent hundreds opening the batting will at least make them rethink it if it wasn't what they already wanted. They know Flynn is a better batsman in general than Fulton and I think the selectors, knowing Taylor was coming back and would command a middle order spot, decided Flynn is the guy who needs to make way but they don't want to drop him for a lesser batsman so they told him to have a go at opening for ND.

He doesn't need to, that's just what we as fans want. In reality averaging 17 with the bat, bowling 10 overs for 45, and being gun in the field is more than enough for him to keep his spot from non-existent replacements. He's had this record for 2/3 years now, and nothing has changed. I wouldn't be against trialing Williamson as the main spinner for a couple of games as I said before, but realistically, that's probably not going to happen.

No doubt at some point we've made a few FC/International cricketers feel really bad about themselves. That's about it. :P

Anyone going to the game? Organised some tickets yesterday. I can't remember the last game I went to.

I reckon if Ronchi makes a good score against England in the warm up match, McCullum will most likely continue to open. I struggle to see the selectors playing two rookie openers at the same time. Still, we'll just have to wait and see. Wouldn't be that shocked to see Kane bumped up to open either. Let's be honest, given Guptill's form he's basically been opening since New Zealand's tour of India anyway.

While I wouldn't pick him, I do feel sorry for Aaron Redmond. Top run scorer in the PS, smashed a big hundred today, and there's not even the faintest whisper of him being a prospect for a callup.

Haha, that was very true for a while. Broke that jinx in the 2007 Chappell-Hadlee series. :)

...then we lost again in 2008.

Williamson has been so bad in Tests lately that he's in danger of CPL ranking him below Munro. Better get some runs this upcoming series.

yeah, the century in SL notwithstanding, I'd much rather he bat 5 than 3, but I think we've had that conversation a gazillion times.
