Has scored 700 odd runs @ 40+ this season, and about 600 @ 80 last season. Also young and talented and a BC for the future.

I mean, how dare he be in contention!

True, didn't mean it to be interpreted the other way, was just asking the question.

Would still prefer Flynn + Fulton.

Not really in favour of either B Martin or Rutherford being picked, especially since I suspect it would be Rutherford instead of lefty Flynn rather than in place of Fulton.

I like Rutherford but we've seen where he is against quality new ball bowling in the ODIs. Selecting him would be purely for development and an admission that we have no opener that would average more than 15 in the series. I would go Flynn & Fulton.

I can't get past that B Martin has 10/691 since returning to Plunket Shield. I guess England's top order is mostly right handed which gives an advantage over Jeets but I'd still prefer a fast bowler. Sentimentally it would be nice for Martin to finally play for NZ after missing out, perhaps unfairly, for years to Vettori and Patel.... But sentiment shouldn't come into it.

Just for sentiment, maybe not, but are there any better spinners playing at the moment? No imo. Not even Jeets.

picking Jeets is probably just as sentimental, I suppose. I was pleased with how he bowled in India and even in SL I thought he bowled very well despite not taking wickets, but if we were to try and justify his selection with numbers...well, there is no real justification.

It is looking largely academic as I think the selectors will make the right call and go with 4 seamers. I'm personally salivating about Southee and Boult at Eden Park if there's a touch of humidity.

Agree there's been a fair amount of sentimentality in picking Jeets too. And now he's damaged that with his batting in South Africa and without those good vibes everyone wants to drop him.

Hope you're right about playing four seamers and getting Williamson to chuck a few down.

So apparently the ground in Auckland wouldn't be deemed fit for international cricket if it was made today. Fair to say with England's death bowling, they need to start well if they want to chase something reasonable.

What a superb start from Finn! First four balls been bang on target and rewarded with the wicket of Watling.

I know we are not supposed to take ODI performance into account when it comes to tests blah blah blah but I am really looking forward to Finn with the red ball this tour.

^ Agree, Watling has looked way out of his depth opening in ODI's. Typically ludicrous selection. Surely it's a better option to step to the leg side and give yourself room against Finn bowling that line. He gets too much bounce to bowl you from a good length. You can't just let a guy like that bowl to you.

It has been superb bowling, but it always made easier if the batsman just sits on the crease and fends at you as opposed to moving across his stumps or even charging once in a while. If you flashed hard against Finn, it's likely the edges would fly well over slip. Makes you wonder what the NZ coaching staff have been working on all week.
