Maybe, though the decline in performance certainly pre-dates Latham by a long way. I was pretty sceptical of him becoming test captain, though there's not a heap of options and he has the India win on his record.

Could be. It's possible what a team projects externally is completely divorced from what they do internally. Though in our case eh it probably isn't.
i don't know - but it really irritates me when I see captains going through the motions. Same when Root was captain, not that the mentality was awful, but the cricket was so defensive and I don't think you can afford that against (good quality) aggressive nations like India, Australia and occasionally England

Yeah I get you. Defensive and passive was my concern, though he was good with field placements and bowling changes in India and batted well too. Christchurch we shot ourselves in the foot with bat and catching, harsh to blame Latham for that. This is the first match he's been in charge where things have just got away and some of the bowling changes have been suspect e.g. too much Southee, not enough O'Rourke at times, though also don't want to overbowl and injure him. So the jury is out, to an extent.

We're more hoping that a new coach in six (I think) months will revitalise the side.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
We're starting to get an Australian-esque mental block against England.

We won in India because in each innings someone put their hand up and made a difference. No one has really done that this time round and have adopted Homers garbage strategy of "can't someone else do it?"

Good captains are hard to find, unless Williamson wants the job back we probably don't have a better captain than Latham right now.

Fleming was better than both of them, he was our last great captain but he isn't coming out of retirement.

As for replacing Stead as coach who are the alternatives? McCullum would be ideal but he would be on more money in England than we could afford.

Even Vettori who is an assistant coach for Australia would probably be on more money than we could afford to pay him as our head coach.

Good to finally catch up with @flibbertyjibber. Shared a couple of beers and a yarn, just a bit later in the day than originally planned as I spent an hour post lunch up on Mt Vic having craft beers and playing cricket. Still, no regerts - managed to fit everything in eventually.
Great to meet you. A cracking day all round and made even better by the dinosaur winning. Looks like an England series win in the offing before I head home too.

still a big departure in experience from Broad, Anderson, Wood and even Robinson from the last series. Also Bashir still seems a weak point in the side.

Bethell seems promising but needs to bat in more challenging conditions, Pope and Crawley as unreliable as ever and Stokes batting-wise starting to fade.

The batting was horrendous in the previous Ashes down under, no doubt. It appears we are slightly better equipped this time round but I think it will still be touch and go.
The narrative around an away Ashes series always revolves around the bowling, hence why we look at beanpoles even if they aren’t fit or they have a comically high FC average, but it’s just as important to have a batting lineup who can grind your opponents into the dust and give your bowlers a rest. We had both in 2010-11, as it stands this bowling lineup (plus possibly Wood, Archer and Tongue, maybe Hull might have matured by then too) have the potential to do very well in Australia, but there are question marks around basically all of the likely batting lineup

i still don't understand how impact can be umpire's call though. surely it's either in line or it isn't, there's no simulation and error involved??
Think it’s because they can’t be 100% sure when the impact happened as there aren’t an unlimited number of frames on the replays. It is curious that the margin of error is the same as for hitting the wickets which is basically guesswork though!

Stokes and Root could do with racking up the runs, think they’ll give them every chance to try to do that tbf, and then the lower order don’t hang around, maybe the declaration never comes
I would bat until at least tea, certainly if one of Root or Stokes go on and on, but I see an early declaration. They like to get games won as soon as possible. Hope I'm wrong. Stokes in particular needs some runs.
