Hey is it still a rule to not bowl excessive short stuff to the tail? Like AFAIK this is an actual rule which was never taken off the books and they did use to enforce it.

Just seems like there are heaps of times now where teams (Wagner) just bully the tail out with short stuff (not saying whether that's right or wrong) but no-one even considers that the umpires can do something about it?

It doesn't tend to be something that's enforced in Test unless the umpires believe the short bowling is a deliberate attempt to injure/be spiteful as opposed to a plan to take wickets.

I mean they could in theory, but they tend not to. In theory they could also say they think Kane Williamson is a shunt and that you're not allowed to bowl bouncers to him either. The law doesn't say anything about the number they bat.

If our spinner is going to be Santner, then why not just play all four, and let Williamson role his arm over for ten overs per innings?
Would it be dumb to just play all 4 seamers plus de Grandhomme in Australia?
Even though I don't think Santner will take any wickets in Australia, I intuitively dislike the idea of 5 seamers.

... but I wanted Somerville picked for Australia anyway.

Is it still a tail? I think they are all fair game now. It’s certainly a bit ‘ more so’ when it’s oz, certainly from our POV!

If you listening to England do their song...used to be involved with a punk band who gave free entry to those who stole a shopping trolley, chariots of wire tour.

Anyone old enough to remember Lance Cairns being no-balled for bowling one bouncer to Jim Higgs (who tbf was a number 12 rather than a number 11 with the bat) when he gloved one to the keeper? That umpire would wonder what's going on these days...

This is good stuff from NZ, proper aggression without trying. I dunno if this is a good idea for Eng, they shouldn’t do these as attack, it’s too predictable.

Well yeah but surely short bowling at a crap batsman is always likely to both hit them and get them out?

Just think it's interesting how this definitely was part of the game and yet with all of the emphasis on safety, head injuries etc these days, plus the general stereotype of things being tougher in the good old days, we've nevertheless gone completely in the opposite direction and it's a free-for-all on tail end noggins.
