***Official*** England in India

England missed a trick with getting the ball changed again, if they'd have got it changed earlier (usual discoloured excuses) as is the norm in ODI cricket that Geraint shot might have got six instead of out.

Not really, would you rather try and hit an older softer darker ball for 6 or a newish hard ball for 6? Look at what happened in the Indian innings when the ball was changed. It's a standard ODI thing these days to get the ball changed around 40 overs so it's easier to slog for boundaries - or are you saying that all the teams that do it are all wrong when they get it changed?

Trouble is England seem to forget about this standard tactic, it wouldn't have stopped them losing of course, but it's still an elementary error that they can do without repeating almost every ODI.

Any news on the squad that was supposed to be named today? I'm still waiting ... anyways, off to 9 am class.

Dude I'm trying to jinx AA, but the man is just too annoying. No amount of jinxing can overpower his ability to turn in an annoyingly adequate performance when you least want it.
He always knows when to deliver. ;) That is why he is the Great One.

I think Pathan is definatly a pretty ordinary bowler. Yet, he keeps taking wickets. I don't get it, can someone explain to me why he keeps doing this?

He has played 55 ODI's, and his stats are:

After 55 matches, he's bowled 2837 balls with 96 wickets, at an average of 24.16 (!) at an economy rate of 4.90. That average is better than Flintoff, and its close to Waqar Younis (WTF?) in ODI's.

Has he just been lucky? His stats remain good even after removing Bangladesh/Zimbabwe (his ODI stats, not test stats). Or maybe its because hes played a lot of ODI's at home lately?

I truly don't get it, Pathan is not that good. Why does he keep taking wickets?

Actually, the one who is recovering in London is GREATER than God. You should have known this by now. ;)
There is only one person GREATER than God...and he has just finshed mopping up England's tail.

In fact, the last 20 ODI's, since Dravid took over, Pathan's bowling average in ODI is (get ready): 19.40 and a batting average of 32.

If you exclude Zimbabwe (last 17 ODIs), his average still is 19.66.

Someone must offer me an explanation because I will self destruct.

well during his first year in International cricket (2004) he was good i'd say, he was bowling much faster plus swinging the ball. Now he is ordinary but still gets wickets odd really.

I' like to see you try!! With the power of the great AA with me, nothing can hurt me!!!

seriously though, how did the rest of the bowlers bowl? I couldn''t watch our bowling and most of the reports are only about yuvi, pathan or kaif.

Munaf was OK, but a bit expensive. Not too bad though. Same with Agarkar, but he got two wickets at the death when the batsmen were pretty much in slog mode. Although Agarkar's stats look better, I felt that he and Munfa pretty much bowled OK. Harbhajan and Powar were both very good. Powar should definatly get more opportunities to play.

Pathan...I don't know. He got four wickets, and four good ones at that. He got all four with his slower ball, or rather, slower than his usual ball. So per the stats, he bowled very well. I just don't know about him.

Yea, in fact, he's getting more wickets now, at a better average, than in 2004.

An average of 19.40 in the last 20 matches is nothing short of outstanding. But...still...I can't get myself to say that 'He is a good bowler'. He is simply too slow, and I always feel that sooner or later people are just gonna start having a go at him. But for some reason that isn't happening.

I hate having preconcieved notions about things, but I can't get myself to admit that a pace bowler with his speed can be that effective day in and day out.

But then again, I thought spin bowling was dead in the early nineties ;).

Anyway, Gambhir gone, Uthappa in. The opening position opposite Sehwag is just a lotto, isn't it?

I wouldnt have minded Jaffer/Uthappa or Jaffer/Gambhir opening combination. Selectors need to give Sehwag a break from ODI (read: kick his *** out) until he can find his rhythm. Although, having two inexperienced openers does not appeal to me either.

Here is the squad for the remaining tour and the Abu Dhabhi matches:

Cricinfo said:
Rahul Dravid (capt), Robin Uthappa, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Suresh Raina, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Ramesh Powar, Ajit Agarkar, Munaf Patel, Venugopal Rao, S Sreesanth, RP Singh.
