The Black Attack
by Berry True
Whilst the Cricket Web Red and Green teams may be struggling, the Cricket Web Blacks claim to be on the other end of the spectrum. Out of the Black camp is pure optimism and confidence. This is somewhat understandable when you consider that they're unbeaten in the 5D competition thus far, with crushing defeats over England A and CW Red. However, considering that they have lost both of their Chef deGroot matches and stand middle of the pack in 25Smash, it's not been a complete dream of a season.
The CW Black is admittedly a force to be reckoned with though. A batting lineup that hinges on Test stars Rich_2001 and Eclipse and the bowling spearheaded by the Ginger Wizard - Neil Pickup. Indeed Pickup is also the captain of the team, a job which he has done quite impressively. The team is so well-balanced that it's hard to see any chinks in its game. Still, there is always room for improvement.
Like the other Cricket Web teams, the fielding does leave a bit to be desired. Neil Pickup in particular has floored some sitters both off his own bowling and that of his charges. That certainly hasn't set a reat example and his team does tend to break down mentally in the field at stages when the Blacks are on top. The best of teams close in with killer instinct, but the CW Black doesn't appear to have that edge quite as yet. Some suggest that perhaps it's due to English leadership rather than that of an Australian.
Another potential weakness for the Blacks is in the batting department. Too much has been placed upon the shoulders of Rich_2001, Eclipse, Ash Chaulk and C Buts. Only one other batsman has crossed 50. Undoubtedly those four are the best batsmen on the team, but others need to step up because, in a long season such as this, there are bound to be lapses by those in question. Add to that, the Test players will not be around all season long. As such, it is my prediction that the Blacks will be at their strongest early in the season and may level off or fade later in the piece.
The bowling looks pretty set and consistent, although the only one with a 5-wicket haul is Neil Pickup, all of the top four bowlers have taken at least 12 FC wickets this season. That has resulted in bowling out teams for totals of 172, 217, 94 and 171 in 4 consecutive innings. Overall opponents to Cricket Web Black have averaged 230 runs per complete innings, whilst the Black batting has averaged 477 per complete innings (5 innings, 3 complete). That's a massive difference.
Overall the Cricket Web Black cricketers are big on confidence with some basis to that. However, they must be aware that at their best there is very little to choose between these teams. This means that over-confidence could cost them a title.
