The Sinking Ship

What a difference a year makes! A year ago CW Red was 12-6 and placed a close 3rd The Chef de Groot OD Trophy. Now they've lost 4 of 5 limited overs assignments and are have suffered two of the heaviest FC defeats in CW history.
So what exactly has changed? In short, a lot. The most obvious would be the departure of veterans Craig, Eyes Only, Blewy, Cloete and Neil Pickup, who were traded to various other Cricket Web teams in the offseason. That said the Test players, Blewy, Cloete and Pickup played just 14 FC games and no OD games between them. In that space of time the Reds went 3-0 with 2 draws.
Admittedly Craig (1446) and Eyes Only (990) were the top two Reds FC runscorers in Season 6 and thus their presence is missed, but replacements Samuel Vimes and Gibbs N Smith are surely more than adequate replacements. Indeed Vimes scored just 107 runs less than Eyes last season, at an average of 2 runs more. Gibbs N Smith (1365) has comparable stats to his opposite number too. Gibbs N Smith has, however, endured the misfortune of injury at this early point.
Overall it is hard to pinpoint the main problem area in this Red team. On paper the bowling attack is strong, with three of the top pace bowlers in the CW system at their disposal, but aside from Mr Ponting, no other bowler averages less than 33. In fact, the other seven bowlers used have taken just 3 more than twice Ponting's haul of 13 between them. Further investigation shows 15 of those wickets coming in single innings performances and thus 14 spread over 5 innings of bowling. That's not exactly what you want from your bowling attack.
For a struggling bowling attack, you'd think the fielding would be sharp so to compensate. That's not been the case. Catches have been dropped by a variety of fielders at a variety of positions and these have generally cost the Reds hugely. The laxadasical attitude of the fielders is with a touch of the West Indian. Is it the captain to be blamed? He himself has dropped his share of catches, but the criticism is more to do with the lack of discipline in the ranks.
That indiscipline is glaring in the batting. This season the Reds batting has featured top-order collapses of 6/65, 4/58, 6/47, 10/68, 4/38 and 5/62 in consecutive FC games. A century from Markus in the first game earned a victory, but since it just been humiliating defeat. The glaring truth is that not only have there been just two centurions this season, but only six have even passed 50 in 34 innings combined. At 30.33, skipper Marc71178 averages more than any of his charge. Of the 13 players used this season, 8 of them have scored more than half of their runs with their highest score.
So what can be done to get the Reds back on track? Indeed it is a very long season yet, but barring a dramatic turnaround very soon, CW Red will be out of all trophy contention with much still to play.
