CW XI opt for batting practice
Cricket Web XI vs Border
Chris Butler charged back into form, whilst David Kearsley placed pressure on the incumbent Cricket Web XI batsmen, as the tourists opted to right their shaky batting in a tame draw in East London.
Batting first after winning the toss, Chris Butler's 120 stood out in a generally lacklustre performance. He was supported keenly by David Kearsley (81) and the two looked comfortable in adding 177 for the 5th wicket, and rescuing the score from the pits of 85-4. Bevan Bennett's legbreaks came to the fore for Border, and he exposed the struggles of the Webheads against the turning ball. Bennett counted both Butler and Kearsley among his victims, and the CW XI could manage only 317 all out.
Border continued to play impressively with the bat. Again Bennett shone, notching a patient and resilient 68 at the top of the order. He was joined by captain Murray Ranger as a half-centurion, and Border got to 270 all out. Dave Watt and David Kennett shared 7 wickets, though the Cricket Web bowlers looked largely unpenetrative.
The lead of 47 runs was consolidated well by the CW XI top order in reaching 122-1. Thamba Mamesh started crisply and stroked a beautiful run-a-ball hundred, despite the lack of a consistent partner. By the time he was caught at long on, he had scored 105 of 182-4.
His dismissal was quickly followed by that of Camps, wrapping up a pair in a generally poor match for the displaced allrounder. Kearsley found his stay enterprising once again. He opened his account with a flowing off-drive against Olivier, and got to 46 before missing a straight ball from Fojela.
Batting at 7, Butler continued to right the wrongs so apparent in his 4 Test innings to date on tour. He struck 8 fours and a six in 63, carrying his match tally to 183 runs. The CW XI declared at 303-9, allowing 11 overs with the ball before the close of the game.
Wright consistently beat the tentative prods from the Border batsmen, but found no luck to claim his first wicket of the match. Kennett charged in and bowled with pace and fire at the other end and he was rewarded with the coveted wicket of Bennett before the close.
