And he didn't get the two miles in 2007 - don't see why he'll get it now in a stronger field.

Americain for me.

I was very confident about Harris Tweed's chances, but not so much now after hearing of his bout of colic. They say he's OK and will still run in the race, but how much training has he lost?

I'll have to reconsider.

I love co-mingled pools. Thank you, Lion Tamer. What a classy colt he is. Hope he comes through this OK and has a crack at the NZ Derby now.

Still waiting for Katie Lee to show the Australians how good she is. Hopefully that day will come soon.

Modest bets for me this year

Monaco Consul - $10 for a win ($260 pay day)

Master O'Reilly - $10 for a place ($630 pay day)

I really like Monaco Consul's chances. Less convinced about old Master O'Reilly - seems to be a shadow of his former self at the moment.

Zipping.

Hitting the line harder than any horse over the 2000 mark, has run alright on softer tracks in the past (not much of this field has run much on heavy tracks at all so it'll be an intriguing race) and has either beaten or been right up there with both So you Think and Shocking when they've all raced ove the past 2 months (The Turnbull and The Cox Plate). And while it was never quite there at the 3200 it's run 4th twice in the past few years to some horses that if were running tomorrow, would beat this lot (IMO).

I'm happy for Australia have So You Think at $3. Means I'll be able to get on Zipping at 30 odd possibly tomorrow and have a few side bets as well.

So You Think to make its way into the history books.

If you asked me Friday, I would have said it had no chance in running in the first half of the field, but after that run on Saturday, its not whats going to win, its how much is So You Think going to win by.

DWTA. I think this is the best field since at least Makybe Diva's third Cup in 2005.

I'm still waiting to see how the track comes up. I think the 3200m is going to be a real stretch for So You Think (although the trainer will have given him every chance of getting it). If the track's wet, it'll become a real test of stamina, and I don't believe that's SYT's strong suit at all. He's by far the best horse in the race, and possibly one of the best to have ever run in the Cup, but that doesn't mean he'll win it. I'll leave him out of all combinations if it comes up slow or worse.

Caulfield Cup to be a very good form guide if the track is wet, IMO. All of those first three home in that race have absolutely no stamina queries.

Also, just another comment on the VRC Derby winner. I noticed the 'experts' on Retro seemed to have decided that Lion Tamer an out-and-out mudder. Don't fall into that trap. Definitely don't write him off in a big race on a dry track. His best performances here in NZ were on dry tracks, and he has a tremendous long-striding action that looks better suited to drier surfaces.

The computer expert Dominic Byrne has ruled out So You Think! I'm pretty sure he ruled out Shocking last year, mind you...

Well, just got back from my calcutta. Ended up drawing 7 of the 24 horses with a mate, we sold Linton, Precedence, Profound Beauty, Bauer, Once Were Wild and Shootout (which happened to be the 2nd biggest paying horse of the night) and picked up Descarado.

Came out well on top in money, $240 outlay for tickets, and like $350 back with Descarado. Will be loving it if Descarado wins.

Yeah, nicely done. :)

SYT was so brave. Today's loss doesn't make him any less of a champion.

When does betting for the 2011 Melbourne Cup open, and what odds can I get on Maluckyday?

Jumping getting nicely underway now.Henderson collected his usual double at Kempton yesterday and it is Haldon Gold Cup day at Exeter today and i fancy Tchico Polos.Nice timing this year as i was on school run last year and missed the race.

As for the Melbourne Cup going to Europe, the Aussies best get used to being beaten in their backyard as it will happen lots over the next few months.

Yeah, how big was Maluckyday for an absolute novice to the bigtime?

****ing gutted with myself. Took a first four and denied my own instincts for first and went for So You Think and Maluckyday, rather than SYT and American. About $370 worth of cash I didn't need clearly, as I had second, third and fourth. Still, took $83 from the cup thanks to each way and the quinella.

A mate of mine went 50/50 with a girl at work on a $120 box trifecta that included Americain, Maluckyday and So You Think. He found out AFTER the race that she had changed the bet at the last minute because she didn't like Maluckyday. He stood to win around $40k apparently. Needless to say he's ropeable.

Confirmed my title of Australia's best punter yesterday.

Picked the trifecta and the winner in the cup, and another couple of winners throughout the day.
