A tidy, but dull batting performance from the Zimbabweans showed they were never after the win in this game at the WACA, though they did occasionally have fun with Muttiah Muralitharan. Nevertheless, despite half-centuries from Piet Rinke and Justice Chibhabha, they took too much time in accumulating them, but Vaas did pick up two wickets. Ruchira Perera seemed to have lost his knack of tacking wickets with atrocious balls, as his nine overs went for 37 with no success, while Murali's figures suffered from the six-hitting and the surprisingly poor bowling he served up.

However, no one truly expected the total of 202 to be anywhere near challenging for Sri Lanka's top order, and indeed it was not. Tawanda Mupariwa got two wickets, but no bowler looked anywhere near containing the Sri Lankans after a slow first 15 overs was through. Boundaries came easily towards the end, and though both Jayasuriya and Atapattu gifted their wickets to Tawanda Mupariwa, there was no doubt about the result after the opening partnership of 130.

Zimbabwe 202 for 4 (50 overs) lost to
Sri Lanka 203 for 2 (35.2 overs) by eight wickets
Man of the Match: ST Jayasuriya

Group C:New Zealand vs Bangladesh
Wellington

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

Bangladesh staged the first upset of the World Cup tournament, defeating New Zealand by 8 runs in a stunning result in Wellington. Mohammad Rafique was central in the effort, spinning out the wickets of Astle, Fulton and Oram in a superb spell of control and variation.

He was supported well by Shahadat Hossain, and New Zealand failed to chase a total of 238 for victory, collapsing from 101/1 to 229-9. Kyle Mills tried his best down the order to salvage a win for the Kiwis, but he and last man Michael Mason could manage only 9 of the required 18 from the final over.

Earlier, a sloppy bowling effort from New Zealand was met with good batting by Javed Omar and Habibul Bashar. The two batsmen added 90 runs for the third wicket, recovering well from 15-2 to 105 at the breakthrough of Mills. Bangladesh stumbled somewhat in the middle overs, but persistently inconsistent bowling by New Zealand provided a lifeline.

A total of 33 extras included a shocking 24 wides, and Bangladesh climbed to the heights of 237 all out. Few would have suspected that the total would be sufficient, but with the never-say-die attitude of the Bangladeshi bowlers and spirited fielding, a dramatic result came to pass.

Bangladesh 237 all out (49.5 overs) beat
New Zealand 229 for 9 (50 overs) by eight runs
Man of the Match: Mohammad Rafique

Searching in defence
West Indies vs England at Adelaide

It's not often that a defending champion enters a tournament as an underdog, but in the case of the West Indies, it is very much so. Struggling for consistent form and with a practice match loss under their belts, it is a determined team that will take the field against England today. That determination may well be manifested as desperation, as the West Indies need to win their opening game to make a clear push to advance to the second round.

For England there is also great concern over today's match-up. A loss to Ireland in their first warmup served no end of embarrassment, and though the team rebounded with victory over Kenya, it was hardly in convincing fashion.

Now with Australia and the defending champions keeping company in Group A, the importance of this clash can hardly be stressed any greater.

Player to Watch: Kevin Pietersen
The way in which England's ODI fortunes lean upon the figure of Kevin Pietersen is uncanny. A big effort may be needed from him today to open England's World Cup account on a high note.

Poised for an upset
Pakistan vs Kenya at Hobart

For many it will be a simple task for Pakistan as they face-off against Kenya today. The gulf in class between the two teams is clear, but rarely should any World Cup match be decided on paper. Bangladesh proved once again that an upset is a very close reality.

Though, a group containing Pakistan, India, Scotland and Kenya doesn't appear as though it will pose in surprises as to which teams advance, Pakistan's form is far less decisive. A far-from convincing win over Bermuda was followed by a loss to CW Red and alarms should be sounding. This, especially given the ability of Kenya to rise to the occasion against opposition better than themselves.

Now we're poised for an upset in Hobart. An upset that can turn Group D upside down.

Player to Watch: Shoaib Akhtar
Recovering from injury and rearing to go, Akhtar will be needed to fire up an otherwise questionable Pakistani attack.

Faced with a thumping century from Shoaib Malik, and tight bowling with plenty of movement, Kenya wilted to the expected defeat against Pakistan at Hobart. Though they were not bowled out inside 50 overs, mainly thanks to a fine half-century from Maurice Odumbe and Brijal Patel scoring a 28 which left the Kenyan fans with no confidenc, they were never in it after two early wickets left the runs coming at a crawl.

Earlier, Shoaib Malik had enjoyed precious little support, as the Pakistani batsmen lacked concentration against some generally unconvincing bowling - with Odumbe's spell mid-innings a welcome exception. However, six double-digit figures with only Malik past 40 would be a cause for concern for the Pakistan management.

Pakistan 273 for 6 (50 overs) beat
Kenya 177 for 6 (50 overs) by 96 runs
Man of the Match: Shoaib Malik

Did someone forget to tell the Kenyans it was a OD match, well done to Bangla also, but it really wasn't unexpected after Holland pushed NZ in a couple matches over here.

The West Indies received brilliance from captain Brian Lara and vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, as they rose to the occasion against England and chased a tricky target of 266 with ease.

Earlier in the day, Corey Collymore led the West Indian charge with 4 wickets. Ed Joyce played a lone hand of 125 at the top of the order, but a devastating middle order collapse undermined a dominant start of 223-2.

Collymore then tugged the game back for the West Indies in the late overs, and England could manage only 265-8 in the end.

The West Indian run chase met a thunderous start with two boundaries by Chris Gayle in the opening over. An opening partnership was forged at a pleasant clip, until Gayle was bowled by Harmison with the score on 47 in the 7th over.

Chanderpaul and Sarwan made careful progress in adding 21 runs. The former was then dismissed by Glenn Chapple and at 68-2, and the West Indies seemed poised for a struggle.

The skipper had no such intentions, however, and wasted no time in stamping his class with a fluent cover drive to the second ball he saw from Chapple. The partnership of leadership advanced with authority and ease against some lacklustre bowling from England, and no bowler was able to contain the pairing.

Brian Lara sealed the fate with a classic swivel-hipped pull shot off Chapple, ending unbeaten on 95. Sarwan was 2 better, with 97 not out.

West Indies 269-2 (46.4 overs) beat
England 265-8 (50 overs) by 8 wickets
Man of the Match: CD Collymore

Awesome match, good to see the Windies starting strongly, and more importantly, England losing.

An innings of 99 from Ricky Ponting paved the way, as his team beat the West Indies by 5 wickets with 5 balls to spare at the MCG. Ponting drove and pulled to perfection throughout the innings, bolstering an otherwise indifferent Australian batting line-up in the chase of 252.

He was joined by Simon Katich in the ranks of half-centurions, but was by far the more fluent on the day. Katich laboured for 90 balls for 57, while Ponting ultimately faced only 107 for his near-century.

Earlier the Australian front line bowlers continued to struggle mightily. Though they dismissed the West Indian top order relatively cheaply, a score of 84-4 was allowed to advance to 251-7, as only Symonds and Clarke looked to exhibit any real control over proceedings. Marlon Samuels was at his finest for the better part of his innings, and topscored with 72 for the West Indies.

Wavell Hinds played the foil with 57 from 110 balls, then Dwayne Bravo added some energy to the final push. Fidel Edwards accounted for Adam Gilchrist early on in the Australian innings. However, the West Indian seam bowlers were generally as ineffective as their Aussie counterparts before the ball started reverse swinging toward the end.

AUstralia 255-5 (49.1 overs) beat
West Indies 251-7 (50 overs) by 5 wickets
Man of the Match: RT Ponting

Group C:South Africa vs Bangladesh

Jacques Kallis was in stunning form and willing to play the saviour of South Africa, after his team struggled through the first half of the game against a spirited Bangladesh. Kallis outshone even his partner Herschelle Gibbs, and hit 11 fours and 1 six in an unbeaten 126 from 127 balls.

His was part of a combined effort of 221 runs unbeaten for the third wicket, with Gibbs. In contrast to his previous knock against Ireland, Gibbs was more subdued and took 129 balls for his 88 runs. The partnership lifted South Africa from a very shaky 25-2 to the victory target of 246 in rather comfortable fashion, with 3.2 overs in hand.

South Africa elected to bowl first in murky conditions at the start of the game. With Shaun Pollock resting, Andre Nel came into the line-up, which continued to look far less than potent. The spin of Boje and Smith was difficult to negotiate at times, but that aside, Bangladesh faced few horrors in getting to 245-6.

Aftab Ahmed came into the team for Nafis Iqbal in this game, and made an impact at number three, scoring the only half-century for Bangladesh - 57. The middle order was generally steady and consistent, but Rajin Saleh's unbeaten 39 was crucial, as he guided the team in the closing stages of the innings.

South Africa 246-2 (46.4 overs) beat
Bangladesh 245-7 (50 overs) by 8 wickets
Man of the Match: JH Kallis
