Group B: Cricket Web XI v Zimbabwe
at CWBCC Stadium
Scorecard
Ball By Ball
Cricket Web XI booked their place in the Super Eights in convincing fashion, though a number of concerns still linger around the side after their 115-run demolition of Zimbabwe. The Africans were simply not good enough to pose any kind of challenge, as the bowlers offered too much width and too little pace while the batsmen was undone by bowling unlike any kind seen in Zimbabwe recently.
It was a rout, from the very beginning when Camps and Markus put on 62 before the over count had reached 10, until Ryan Higgins was clean bowled by Neil Pickup on the 300th legitimate delivery of the Zimbabwean innings. The only setback was when Greg Strydom had de Silva caught at point by Rinke for 8, and Cricket Web XI were 82 for two, but captain Brendan Goff steered the ship to a fine total, playing a restrained innings of 104 not out to ensure his return to form. At the other end, Ian Markus pulled, cut and hooked his way to a career-best unbeaten 144, as the Zimbabwean medium pace and so-called spin was treated with disdain. Cricket Web did, however, not manage to make 300, mainly due to alert fielding in the final overs.
When Zimbabwe batted, it was a different story. Five batsmen perished lbw, mostly to full and fast deliveries, and the great hope of Zimbabwean batting, Chamu Justice Chibhabha, failed to score a single boundary before being trapped lbw by Patrick. All the Webhead bowlers contributed, but Zimbabwe still managed to bat out 50 overs, thanks to extremely dogged resistance from wicket-keeper Brendan Taylor, who kept out 111 deliveries before finally being lbw to Liam Camps - Camps' only wicket in nine tight overs. As Charles Coventry and Blessing Mahwire also contributed gritty knocks against occasionally wayward bowling, the margin of victory became less than it really should have been, but the gap in talent was visible nevertheless.
Cricket Web XI 299 for 2 (50 overs) beat
Zimbabwe 184 all out (50 overs) by 115 runs

Group D: India v Kenya
at Bellerive Oval
Scorecard
Ball By Ball
India survived a scare at Bellerive Oval, but Kenya exposed the weaknesses in this bowling attack, and India were probably glad they chose to bowl first. None of the opening bowlers managed to make any significant inroads, as Maurice Ouma and David Obuya contributed significant scores, and then the grand old man of Kenyan cricket, Steve Tikolo, came to the crease.
Tikolo played a wonderful innings to please the crowd, though in its nature it was not substantially different from the centuries taking place at the CWBCC Stadium. However, it was a gutsy fight from a minnow, and when Maurice Odumbe came in for some late-order slogging, and the wides cell reached double digits, Kenya posted 245 for four.
However, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar quickly dismissed all notions that Kenya posed a genuine challenge. The pair smashed Kenya's opening bowlers to pieces, and only Tony Suji, of all people, had some control over them; especially Sehwag, who eventually ended up hoiking him to Odumbe in frustration. He had made 69, continuing on his fine World Cup tournament, but today Sachin Tendulkar outshone him. He went on to make a stunning century, including thirteen fours and a six, and carried India all the way to victory, even after Martin Suji's double strike in the 41st over. Thus, India recorded a quite easy seven-wicket win in the end, but they only won with three overs to spare, suggesting that the Kenyans would not have embarrassed themselves in the Super Eights. However, they are knocked out in all but the wildest of theories, while India all but secured their place.
Kenya 245 for 4 (50 overs) lost to
India 249 for 3 (46.4 overs) by seven wickets
Man of the Match: Sachin Tendulkar
