We're considering a modification on that though, where we have the pool stage, then a Super 8's stage, then the semis, then the final.

Would be interesting to hear some feedback on which format we should use.
Sorry, the WC'07 will be using the Super 8s stage down to 1v4 and 2v3.

I prefer that approach, too - I'm getting my Champions Trophies, World Cups and Euro 2004s mixed up.

There were too many bowlers in the team, so I added Powar instead.

Let's just say that we didn't use the ICC's method. Instead we've placed it to provide for a more competitive competition.

**Official CW XI World Cup Preview**

The Cricket Web XI take their first ever trip to th World Cup and their second trip to the West Indies. This team that manifests such a unique and positive concept of players from all across the globe in one team - from England to Australia, India to Trinidad and Tobago. This multicultural team now faces its greatest challenge to date - dethroning WMD Australia and beating the world.

The players:

Blewy (C)
RHB - 1037 runs @ 69.13
RM - 1 wickets @ 40.00
A charismatic leader and stylish, yet powerful batsman, Blewy is among the best limited overs players in the world. He played in the first CW XI ODI, but was then sacked. After his return a series later, he progressively got his game going. He was dropped once more in England and fought his way back playing Pura Cup cricket in Australia until he emerged once more in Sri Lanka, smashing 49*, 71 and 121* in the three matches played their. His was the first of two to date and the innings came off just 103 balls. Blewy's captaincy will certainly be tested out with the various characters under him in the squad.

Cloete (vc)
RHB - 1165 runs @ 46.60
LS - 10 wickets @ 37.80
Like Blewy, Cloete is among the best batsmen in the world. His Test record is phenominal, but his ODI record has only approached its potential lately. Beofre touring Australia in 2003, his average stood in the mid-30's. Now it's in the mid-40's and he's certainly not keen on letting it settle there. Still, he has something to prove as he's not yet scored an ODI century, despite scoring 10 Test hundreds already.

Peter Young (wk)
RHB - 249 runs @ 22.64
RM - 0 wickets
Since the first ODI played by the Cricket Web XI, the wicketkeeper's spot has been a tricky one to fill. Ryan, Andre, Eyes Only and now Peter Young have gotten the chance with none doing enough with the bat to make it his/her own. Young has the faith of the selectors on this occasion and is currently the most prolific of those tried, albeit with just 249 runs. With that in mind, and the fact that his glovework has been shaky enough to come under heavy scrutiny, Peter Young has a lot to prove and everything to gain in this World Cup.

Rich_2001
RHB - 1403 runs @ 46.77
LS - 0 wickets
Rich is one the most consistent batsmen in the CW XI side and for a time held the number one world ranking. The former captain of the CW XI led the team to the flagship tours of Australia and England with encouraging success. Now he falls into place behind Blewy to offer experience, advice and hopefully a hunger for runs at the top of the order.

Eclipse
LHB - 832 runs @ 34.67
Eclipse is another of the talented CW top order. His career average of 34.67 does not quite do him justice, considering his talent which is better expressed in Tests so far. In New Zealand and Australia, Eclipse struggled to find form and posted a combined average of 24.57 in 14 innings with just 1 fifty. He has not passed 50 runs in an ODI in his last 7 innings. However, Eclipse returned to runs in Cricket Web's pre-World Cup tournament and will hope to carry that form into the Caribbean.

Nikhil Nichani
RHB - List-A OD - 707 runs @ 54.38
OS - List-A OD - 9 wickets @ 32.33
Like many others in the CW XI, there are great expectations for the as yet unproved Nichani. Nikhil is the only player in the squad yet to represent the XI, but his sublime strokeplay for the Cricket Web 'B' team should mean that he will prosper at the highest level. Nichani has the tools to become a top-class cricketer - solid technique, shot selection and useful part-time off-spin. We eagerly await to see how he uses them.

Rik
LHB - 244 runs @ 22.18
LAS - 31 wickets @ 22.19
Rik is the only true ODI specialist in the WC squad. Despite playing 22 ODI's, he has never played a Test match. His spin bowling is accurate, economical (3.94 rpo) and penetrative. His left-handed batting is potentially explosive and his fielding is brilliant. In the field Rik is a livewire and an allround great player to have in a limited overs side.

Lord of Darkness
RHB - 401 runs @ 33.42
OS - 21 wickets @ 33.29
Another previous captain, Lord of Darkness briefly led the CW XI in Tests in 2003. He struggled at the start of his career, but found his stroke on the spinning pitches of the subcontinent. Now he's become a good batting allrounder, but his spin bowling, whilst generally economical (4.58 rpo), has not been as penetrative as he's shown it can be.

Mr. Mxyzptlk
RHB - 275 runs @ 25.00
RFM - 29 wickets @ 24.41
Mr. Mxyzptlk's international career started disappointingly, as he was dismissed for ducks in 2 of his first 3 innings before being sacked. It was then on the CW XI's tour of England that he first made his mark. With the ball he came of age, taking 4/33 and 4/44 in consective Natwest games against the English hosts. He then settled somewhat with the bat, but has fallen off since, still averaging a useful 25. During the pre-World Cup tournament, Mr. Mxyzptlk exhibited superb form and will be itching to play in his native West Indies.

Bugssy
RHB - 316 runs @ 31.60
RMF - 5 wickets @ 45.60
The last of the selected allrounders in the team, Bugssy is on his third tour at international level. In his 12 matches since debuting in the VB Series in Australia, Bugssy's average of 31.50 with the bat shows a clear underachivement, given his average of 71.04 in non-international List-A matches. By the same token, Bugssy has not yet had the international success with the ball that he has had in the domestic game. Whether this will be the breakout series or not for the talented youngster, time will tell.

Lucky Eddie
RHB - 186 runs @ 26.57
RF - 38 wickets @ 25.53
A veteran of the game, Lucky Eddie is currently the oldest active player in world cricket. Still, he shows no signs of the age. LE is the most experienced and succesful of the CW bowlers. As such, his sharp pace bowling and strong lower order batting will be a true asset to the team in this, his swan song.

Top Cat
RHB - 129 runs @ 14.33
RF - 26 wickets @ 33.38
The fastest bowler in the side, Top is another veteran due to officially retire at the close of the Cup. Also, like LE, Top Cat is a capable lower order batsman with a Test fifty to prove it.

Neil Pickup
RHB - 23 runs @ 7.67
LS - 35 wickets @ 18.57
This ginger wonder holds the rights to claim of most successful spin bowler in CW history. Pickup quickly established himself in domestic cricket and was promoted to the Test squad after just over a season of Dev League. At the time he was considered more of a 5D player, but injuries meant that he found his way into ODI contention and has not looked back since. He now sits among the top 5 ranked bowlers in the world in limited overs cricket and has an astounding wicket-taking rate of a wicket per 27.83 balls, with an economy of exactly 4. Regarding his batting, Neil Pickup is truly entertaining, but his average of 7.67 flatters his greatly. He is a leader with a keen business sense (seen in the great revolt) and should serve the team well with the ball in the West Indies, or at least get them a good deal on their hotel accomodations.

Mr. Wright
RHB - 2 runs yet to be dismissed
RFM - 5 wickets @ 37.40
The second of three Mr's in the side, Mr. Wright is still inexperienced in playing just six ODI's since his debut in New Zealand. Thus far he has proven tight and economical, but has not shown the penetration he has in domestic cricket past. Mr. Wright is set to a solid member of this less than established attack following a good pre-World Cup tournament.

Mr. Ponting
RHB - 52 runs @ 10.40
RF - 13 wickets @ 23.92
All signs seem to indicate that Mr. Ponting (no relation to Ricky) will be a great player for the CW XI. His success has come at all levels so far and he went to have a great series, bowling quickly and swinging the ball away from the right-handers in New Zealand. Now we wait to see whether he goes on to fulfil his apparent legacy.

David Jr.
RHB - 1 run @ 0.50
RFM - 10 wickets @ 21.00
David Jr. had a superb debut series for the CW XI in New Zealand. Expectations were for a solid, pacy bowler when he was picked, and it took injuries to Rik and Master Blaster to give him his debut. He has since laid the foundation to establish himself in the XI with some impressive seam bowling.

LS? LBG more like! You've not lived until you've faced my wrong'un. :D

I'm thoroughly looking forward to the tournament and I am hoping that I don't get too many fines and bans from the ICC for any comments that I may make to the umpires.

*Interview with Captain Blewy*

Good day Blewy, just a few questions for you. I'm sure our readers are excited to hear what you have to say ahead of this first ever World Cup in which the Cricket Web XI will compete, so let's get started.

Q: What are your expectations for the World Cup? Do you really believe that the CW XI has a genuine shot of dethroning Australia?
Look i don't want to go around saying we are gonna win it, but i know all the team are confident of going well, we have performed against all nations in the past and know if we put it together on the day there aint many that will match us.

Q: What aspects of the team game do you think that you and the players have to work on?
Definatley partnerships, In the past we have had 1, 2 or 3 players go well a game, but very rarely do we get 5 or 6 players perform on the 1 day. We have players talented enough but we need to build partnerships in the big games to be successful.

Q: There are suggestions that the CW XI will only progress in the World Cup if you (personally) score heavily. Do you agree?
I don't think so, Our side is blessed with quality bats. I believe our top 5 is as good as any in wold cricket. Cloete, Rich and Eclipse are all proven performers on the International stage, and to go with then we have Bugssy and Nikhil who are just waiting to step in. I hope to lead from the front but by no means is this a 1 man team...

Q: Lucky Eddie and Top Cat return to the team for their swan song tour. What do they add to the team scenario?
These 2 are class.. Between the 2 they have more ODI wickets then the rest of our bowlers put together. Eddie is a freak, to be able to throw away the walking frame before he goes out to the wicket and bowl like he does is amazing, and T_C has given him great support over the years, we hope to send them out on a high...

Q: The London Times printed suspicions of you being romantically linked to Jessica Alba. Care to comment?
Um no i promised Jessica i wouldn't....

Q: Which team are you most excited to play in the World Cup? Which team are you most afraid of?
I think Australia on both accounts, Although i think afraid is not the right word. Australia are a quality side, they give off an intimidating aura, but we have shown we can compete with Australia and the ommision of Bevan from their side is HUGE IMO. How it efffects them, only time will tell...

Q: There are many characters in the CW XI, a couple of whom have a reputation as being difficult. Without calling names, what strategies do you intend to use to deal with this?
Well we have a sponsorship from Nike to supply socks to a couple of players, we also have multiple alcohol sponsorships to ensure some players get what they need, But in all seriousness, we have a pretty good group of guys here who are all pretty close and we have all come here for the same reason, i think we will be right...

Q: Who are the key players in the team for success in the World Cup?
I think our 2 big keys will be Bugssy and PY, both have shown signs of what they can do, BUT neither has produced on a consistent basis. If they perform close to potential this side will just grow even bigger and we will be tough to beat..

Q: There is big expectancy from the CW XI supporters that a victory be pulled off. Do you feel pressured in terms of your role as captain?
There is always pressure no matter what game it is, but we have had alot of support from all CW XI supporters, and we will use that support to drive us. We have a rather large contingent of people coming to the Windies to support us and we don't want to let them down. The side is very mentally strong and im sure we are up for the challenge...

Thank you for your time Blewy and good luck in the World Cup.

Cheers mate..

Hopefully I'll be able to sim the first game of the World Cup live on MSN. The time I'm thinking of is midnight GMT, but I'll adjust according to when the most people will be available. Thoughts?

Won't be on MSN now. I have little internet time and a lot of squad research to do for the WC, so I don't want to get sidetracked.
