Has been taken downtown a few times in domestic one day cricket. Very similar to his opening partner in the U/19 World Cup of 2004, Cam Huckett. Both swing the ball well, but tend to slide onto the bat nicely on flat wickets against top quality batting; daresay both (at this stage) have found their level at 2nd XI cricket.

Personally, think that the Futures League has to go. Provide incentives for young players to play, however U23 is such an abitrary age. Evan Gulbis has made four district hundreds this year already in Melbourne, but misses out by a year, and squeezing him into the side would be at the expense of some contracted players out of form.

Mind you, you'd all be happy to hear that Rob Quiney has his form back. Got 225 on the weekend... against Camberwell.

Yes read that in the paper. Must have been some innings, nobody else passed 50 right? So want Quiney to find his form again, hoping Camberwell has played a small role in the return of Rob Quiney.

Amazed that Putland has yet to play Shield cricket for South Australia. Seems to always be mentioned as the back-up paceman, or twelth man for nigh on 3-4 years. Havn't watched a great deal of him, but the two-three FRC games I have watched him he has looked ok. Always swings the ball.

Yeah, but he is still pretty young.

Don't know who is the better bowler out of Haberfield and Putland. Because George and Cleary will be the first two choices.

Harsh considering he plays here. In Vic, maybe but here, reckon considering the (lack of) competition, he'd have gotten more of a go if SACA were picking guys on grade form.

Well, historically, SA have picked swing bowlers when there's no real guns in the attack because they generally get some assistance in grade cricket and rack up some impressive numbers (afternoon southerlies and all that). Accurate swing bowlers will generally go well at Adelaide Oval; Swain, Sincock, Hawke, Wigney, Sayers, etc. Putland is one of the better performed bowlers around and no quick is really putting their hand up this year, Christian arguably the most consistent this year. So he should be there or thereabouts. There's possibly a big opportunity for him for a regular spot; maybe all he's missing is being able to hit the channel consistently enough?

I haven't seen a great deal of him obviously but it always seemed more of a length problem to me - when it's not swinging much he just bowls really juicy half volleys that come right onto the bat. You could get a new ball spell out of him but I get the impression he'd be fodder after that because he doesn't adjust his length.

Yeah. The most recent relevant example I can think of is Brett Swain. Got plenty of swing and took bags of grade wickets but didn't get a go for SA until he found a less driveable length.

I think Putland is a better bowler, Haberfield probably a touch sharper though

Agree to a point, I think it's good there's a decent level competition for the younger players but squeezing out guys that would be better isn't the right way to go. I know some of the rules they have are a bit random (such as only one new ball, bonus points for spinners getting wickets) etc... so theres no reason all the teams can't just have say 5 under 23's in their team at least, that way the late bloomers still have a chance of making it.

Yeah, I would like to see Putland given a go in the shield team at some point soon, talented bowler, but just looks like he needs to adjust his length after the ball stops swinging or when the ball isn't that new.

Dave Hussey has to be pretty much the most under-rated T20 bowler ever (okay granted, T20 history isn't immense in its length, but still.) He bowls an awesome 4 over spell for **** all runs without anyone noticing so often.
