Harsh considering he plays here. In Vic, maybe but here, reckon considering the (lack of) competition, he'd have gotten more of a go if SACA were picking guys on grade form.
Well, historically, SA have picked swing bowlers when there's no real guns in the attack because they generally get some assistance in grade cricket and rack up some impressive numbers (afternoon southerlies and all that). Accurate swing bowlers will generally go well at Adelaide Oval; Swain, Sincock, Hawke, Wigney, Sayers, etc. Putland is one of the better performed bowlers around and no quick is really putting their hand up this year, Christian arguably the most consistent this year. So he should be there or thereabouts. There's possibly a big opportunity for him for a regular spot; maybe all he's missing is being able to hit the channel consistently enough?
I haven't seen a great deal of him obviously but it always seemed more of a length problem to me - when it's not swinging much he just bowls really juicy half volleys that come right onto the bat. You could get a new ball spell out of him but I get the impression he'd be fodder after that because he doesn't adjust his length.
Yeah. The most recent relevant example I can think of is Brett Swain. Got plenty of swing and took bags of grade wickets but didn't get a go for SA until he found a less driveable length.
I think Putland is a better bowler, Haberfield probably a touch sharper though

Agree to a point, I think it's good there's a decent level competition for the younger players but squeezing out guys that would be better isn't the right way to go. I know some of the rules they have are a bit random (such as only one new ball, bonus points for spinners getting wickets) etc... so theres no reason all the teams can't just have say 5 under 23's in their team at least, that way the late bloomers still have a chance of making it.
Yeah, I would like to see Putland given a go in the shield team at some point soon, talented bowler, but just looks like he needs to adjust his length after the ball stops swinging or when the ball isn't that new.
