How O'Keefe was overlooked for Michael ****ing Beer is beyond me.

Coulter-Nile with early wickets again. He's having an awesome season - great to see him actually put a few games together instead of going down with an injury. With Coulter-Nile and Duffield leading it, the Warriors pace attack could be pretty threatening if Hogan gets fit.

Heard a rumour that was damien wrights last game (forum rumour),any word on whether shane harwood is available next year.

Copeland is amazing, keeps getting top-order wickets, every match.
He's beating down the door as fast as he can. Really can't do much more than what he's doing.

Interestingly James Hopes was in the top 10 run scorers and top 10 wicket takers this shield season. He's in incredible form at the moment. Would have been better than Hastings IMO.

Hopes in this current form would be pushing for test selection, if he was a few years younger. Some great numbers with bat and ball, but I think Butterworth might be very close to a test spot, along with Copeland. You gotta seriously look at the guys who are in stunning form and playing some great cricket, and are the 'right' age.

Admittedly I haven't seen Butterworth in ages, but he never looked like a test cricketer to me. Can't imagine his bowling would be threatening on the types of tracks you get in international cricket.

Meanwhile I think the Bulls have done an exceptional job to finish in 3rd position in the Sheffield Shield this season, even if Hopes and Lynn carried the team for much of it.

Be a very interesting situation in SA. From all reports, Berry has always been a Crosthwaite fan, because he was a much more natural wicket-keeper than Wade. A more inconsistent batsman though.

But when Berry started coaching, he played an instrumental role in getting Tim Ludeman to Carlton, and he was keeping while Nathan Pilon played as a pure batsman to help him develop. He remained one of Ludo's big fans.

I think that Chuck would know that, as pure cricketers, Crossy is a better player. But Ludo has stayed in the system, probably fitter, and would likely have the support of the hierarchy. Very interesting situation.

The regular part of the Shield season is over so I thought I'd post up some stats.

Definitely good to see a few spinners with good season figures for a change. Hopefully O'Keefe can somehow be given a full season next year because he's comfortably the best long-form spinning option in the country IMO. Adam Maher certainly snuck up on me! No doubt that Tasmania have played on some sporting wickets but he's had an awesome finish to the season to end up where he is.

A team of the season would look something like this:

Code:
[B] Mts	Runs	Ave	Wkts	Ave[/B]

1	MJ Cosgrove	10	715	51.07
2	SE Marsh	4	414	59.14
3	UT Khawaja	6	598	74.75	1	21.00

8	LR Butterworth	9	293	29.30	43	15.04
9	SNJ O'Keefe	4	79	15.08	19	17.57
10	TA Copeland	9	115	16.42	40	23.35
11	AJ Maher	8	46	7.66	37	15.45
Top order batting has definitely become a concern when you consider that Cosgrove who only opened in one game and Marsh who only actually played four games are the opening pair there. Openers did better after Christmas as you'd expect (Harris turned his season around, Warner and Kruger came into their respective teams and did well etc) but it definitely wasn't a season for openers overall.

Faulkner, Butterworth, Maher- now thats why Tassie are number one. Outstanding seasons with the ball, brilliant.

It has been a season for the bowlers (both pace and spin). Some incredible records from very unlikely bowlers. So many bowlers with a < 25 average.

Perhaps we have seen some more sporting wickets this season, but most teams have horrible depth in batting.

Their pitch helped in that regard, but yeah, indeed. Doherty took 19 FC wickets @ 26 as well which they probably wouldn't have been banking on.

Michael Beer - best spinner in Australia.

Yeah, tbh, those lists are somewhat worrying. Not many Test players in there. Even taking into account sporting decks, no-one came within shouting distance of 1000+/50+ for the season, the top-5 all med-quick swing bowlers. A damning indictment of techniques running around in Shield cricket?

The players who had the potential to score close to 1000 runs in the season just didn't play enough matches. I'm talking about Khawaja, Marsh and probably even McDonald after his excellent start.

For my money James Hopes is the Shield Player of the Year. Top 10 in both categories is awesome going. Mark Cosgrove would have to be a close second. People have mentioned the Tassie quicks excellent success on some sporting wickets, well Cosy had to bat on them and did very well.

Hopefully after the final Cosgrove and Copeland take out the titles.
