Nortje is so elite he should move to NZ. Get to bowl to some actual totals ya know.
On the flipside though, he would then probably get Joe Rooted and be bowled into the ground - just looking at the other New Zealnad bowlers

He has looked off the pace so often in 2022 that it astounds me that he was the top Test wicket taker.
His bowling in the past year, from what I've seen, has been like a 22-averaging version of Ian Botham. Bowls all manner of filth and picks up a stack of wickets with it.

It's not even that he picks up wickets with filth imo, that can still be great if they're important spells. But he often picks up cheap wickets when the game has already drifted away and they're no longer as valuable. That's been a recurring theme of his bowling in the last few years.

The bad light issue sums up why test cricket struggles to survive.

People are paying good money to turn up to watch games. TV companies are paying huge sums to televise games.

And yet, time after time across the world, play halts when it's perfectly playable. Yes, conditions might not be perfect but they are in no way dangerous so play should continue.

The lost count of the number of times I've sat in grounds in England when the light isn't perfect but playable, only to see the players troop off.

The authorities have to act on this. Cricket doesn't exist in its own bubble, it relies on the paying public and TV companies paying for it.

Play should only stop when there is absolutely no alternative as to continue would endanger players safety.

Is test cricket actually dying though? I swear people say this all the time and have been for ages. NZ are just coming off a golden generation in the format, the windies are the best they've been in ages, same goes for bangladesh.

Feels better the past few years than in the early 10’s where people seemed seriously worried about T20’s and ODI’s making it obsolete. iirc at one point people here were saying in a few years it would just be the Ashes left.

This narrative is only ever pushed by boards and pundits working for broadcasters.

Both stand to make a lot of money off more t20 cricket being played.

The big 3 make bank from tests. Even when we were abject our fans turned out for tests during the holidays, and a substantial number went over to Melbourne to watch that grim test.

Cricket fans fall into 2 groups - the fans who enjoy cricket for the cricket and the fans who are the equivalent of the casual summer festival goer - they're there for the festival not the music.

Boards and broadcasters know one of those groups will keep coming back even if you dog them so they want to cater heavily towards the other.

Whatever it takes!!!
I think we are about 5 years away from the pink balls becoming far better and becoming standard for all test cricket, which would mean you can basically play with the lights on in a situation like today without issue, even if the test was originally scheduled to be a day test.

It happened with ODIs when even as recently as the 90s a lot of ODI cricket tended to happen with the red ball too.

That would be ideal. One can only hope. Then hopefully we’ll get a new version of Clouderson to make fun of, someone who can only bowl with the pink ball.
