His 50 overs record is pretty average, itbt. He only gets picked in the ODI team on the back of his T20 form to put bums on seats.
He has barely even played any 50 over cricket since he became good. That "record" you're looking at is almost entirely from over 3-4 years ago.

(a result of the recent Matador Cup format, where if you miss the month the tournament is on you don't play any 50 over cricket ever)

If we want a coco bananas top order then Lynn is great at three. Next WC is in England though so whether the balls to the wall approach is he right one is a different issue
England LO pitches of late have been some of the most batting friendly in history. Small grounds too. Might see a repeat of the last WC where 400+ scores are commonplace.

Yeah I think the "English pitches are bowler-friendly" meme died after England reinvented their gameplan in 2015.

Whether the pitches will still be roads earlier in the season though is another question.

It’s a good point about Paine; he did OK yesterday but to be brutally honest 27 off 31 wasn’t fast enough in the context of the match. And considering he has a ODI career SR of sub-70 I don’t think he’s capable of a 40 off 30 at the end of the innings that often.

Picking someone like Paine seems a bit of a retrograde move by Oz; feels like they’re ignoring the previous 20 years of ODIs which they initiated by dropping Healy (who had a far higher SR than Paine) for Gilchrist and a ODI keeper had to be an explosive opener or middle order bat, not just a handy No. 7 who can nudge and eek out 25 off 30 in the closing overs.

Put it this way; would any opposition side be particularly fearful of seeing Paine come in for the closing overs of a ODI innings? Doubt it.
I think you're ignoring the 17 years after Gilchrist took over the test job. Australia wants the same keeper in all formats of the game. It's why Nevill was always on the edge. You only have to look at Wade and Haddin interchanging with each other

Remember the time leading up to Warner getting dropped from the ODI team because he was trying to hit a six from every delivery he faced? That's exactly what you'll get from Lynn in the 50 over format.

I think that's because Australia's batting depth isn't what it should be, so they had to be more circumspect, though I agree Ali should have been taken on.

Australia needs to stack its ODI side with more dynamic batsmen, and I would look to do it around Smith being at four and Marsh & Stoinis at six & seven. I'd play Maxwell at five, meaning they need a dynamic number three who's not afraid to go hard at it.

Finch
Warner
?
TPC
Maxwell
MMarsh
Stoinis

is a top seven with a fair bit of strike power in it. Smith can do the Root job and bat at a run a ball without going stupid while the others tee off. I'm not sure about number three, but ideally it would be a keeper/ batsman. Is it too soon for Carey? His ODD stats aren't exactly great. Bancroft maybe? Same applies to him. Handscomb's ODI and ODD stats are better, but I don't recall him keeping at all. he might be the answer at three or four, which would free up spots 8-11 for bowlers.

I just don't think they can afford to carry a keeper at 7 or 8 who bats as Paine does. Not that he's a total dud, just they need something more dynamic imo.
Smith has to bat 3 to play the role you want him to play.

Ditto Root, no idea why he's been moved to 4 but with Hales lasting 3 balls he effectively batted at 3.

Only getting 5 FTA one day games a year has meant that C9 have wanted them only on Friday/Sunday to get the best ratings.

Used to be that we'd have a tri series that lasted around 2 months where we'd play around 8 games and there'd be a Tuesday game each week between the neutrals.

Weather is set fair up here in Brisbane tomorrow

Hazlewood out, and Carey has been flown in on stand-by for an ill Paine

Dunno where else to post this, so here will do......but WTF??

I've just looked a bit more closely to England's schedule the next few weeks/months and it's seriously ****ed up!! I thought when we finish this ODI series against Aus, we had a break then head to NZ for a couple of tests and some one dayers. But apparently immediately following this current series, we play a triangular 7 game T20 tourney with NZ and Aus with venues in both countries. We then immediately move onto a 5 ODI series against NZ followed by the 2 test matches.

All of this will finish on the 7th Apr, when players like Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow involved in all forms get to head back home.........after nearly 6 months of being away!!

I seriously hope that none of the England players that have been on this Ashes tour have to front up for this ridiculous T20 tri series.

That's essentially what's been happening in England's tests too, so idea why he doesn't just move up to 3.

Anyway, back to Australia, looks like they're without their second best ODI bowlers. Someone to make a debut? Who is this Carey fella? Any good? Can he play like a modern ODI batsman?

If England can beat Aus in this current ODI series, I agree that the cross format guys (Root, Ali, Bairstow) should be allowed to sit out the tri series, return fresh for the ODIs and tests and then off to the IPL. Root is already planning a stint (probably doesn't like being at home). I think it would be a great experience for him and if he can get another league under his belt before the next world cup, I think it benefits him a lot. Maybe the PSL? Caribbean?

Have you seen the fixtures for the English summer? It is clogged up with Aussie one-dayers!
