I won't go that far. He is good but he mostly thrives on pace bowling. His weaknesses against spin are quite well known and that's what separates him from the other two names that you mentioned.

Quite right but I said talented it's a technical thing that makes Lara / Tendulkar better players of spin.

Also he is a great player of spin when he goes on the attack he just strugels when deffending them because of his hard hands.

Just look at his feilding for example it's brilliant. He has great hands a brilliant dead eye throw overall his motor skills & hand eye are probably the best In the world ATM.

Not many people know but Ponting was never coached as a young player untill he was about 16 and considering he made his test debute at 20 you can see how talented he is.

You should see him play golf to !! boy hes good.
One has to agree that ponting is an exceptionally gifted batsman, However inspite of his exploits this series, I would rate Lara's batting far more noteworthy by virtue of the quality of oppersition that he had to contend with.

I think he had a very very good series against SRL in SRL . He played Murali very very well in that series. It may be that he had just one bad series. He just looks more solid and attacking player now-a-days.

Currently he's playing well, but I still don't think he can match SRT just yet.

Once again the aussies have shown why they are the best in the world. Congrats to Steve waugh on eclipsing Gavaskar and Sir Don. He is not my favorite player but you got to give the devil his due !:( Their are so many things that young players can learn from Steve.

Gayle and Smith played admirably to survive the 23 overs before close scoreing 89 runs. They were not intimidated by Lee, Gilchrest or Macgrath thankfully. But theirs much work to be done !

Eclipse Gavaskar and the Don? What was Steve's new record?

Also, who is Gilchrest? Or do you mean Gillespie?

Waugh has now accumulated more runs then Gavaskar in test cricket by surpassing 10,122 runs and becoming the second highest run getter in test cricket after Allan Border. He also has got 30 test centuries now, which is one more then the Don and is now only behind Gavaskar and SRT on that count.

I would rate Lara higher because of the quality of opposition he is facing as compared to what Ponting is facing.

It's a shame that the selectors had to revert to picking that talentless opener, Gayle....

Lol. Seriously, aren't they feeling stupid right now. Gayle has played very well, 47*.

Re: the pitch: horrible cricketing pitch!! All the pitches so far have been thoroughly disappointing. The pitch is dead, no bounce, no pace, no assistance. The harder McGrath sent the ball into the pitch, the less it bounced. It's like playing cricket on mud! It's really shameful.

Kensington Oval has traditionally been the one pitch where the West Indian bowlers have gotten assistance at home. If memory serves correctly, they bowled out India (Dravid, Tendulkar, Ganguly) for 120 or thereabout last year, and SA (Gibbs, Kirsten, Kallis) for 140-odd the year before on this pitch. What has happened??

A good pitch should, at the very least, be even paced (ie allow bowlers to operate at their regular pace), so as to limit the distinct batting advantage of modern cricket. If we don't do our best to prepare conditions by which we can win at home, where do we intend to win?

Re: the selectors: this statement of the scenario should reveal the faultiness of their selection:-

They debut two young players in the second Test and two more in the third...while dropping one of the debutants from the previous match.

I wouldn't go as far as to put Ponting up with Tendulkar and Lara.
Why not with Lara?? Ponting has a better Test avrage witch you would expect to continue to rise and only 3 less 100's despite being 6 years younger? Also there ODI records are very simular with Ponting again only 2 less 100's so you would expect him to easly overtake Lara in terms of runs & avrage by the time he retires.
