well done AUS on retaining the trophy.......

well done WI on making it to 5 days........

well done Ponting on MOTM.......

both team's batsmen are putting up the runs with multiple century scorers......

Lara, Ganga & Ponting all look in fine touch for the series so far.

On a slightly negative note it could be said that the WI are concious of their lack of bowling penetration & are serving up flat decks to nullify the Aussie seam & spin attack, and are stacking their batting order to try and keep in the games to date!

has to be 'Tugger' at the top of the list - as evidenced by the battering he took from the WI quicks when he virtually stood alone in the decisive test on the last tour there - probably one of the gutsiest displays of true grit I have seen! I can't think of too many other batsmen prepared to take it on the body from those guys under those circumstances!

Im afraid an attack of Drakes, Dillon & Collins would do little to scare even the average of batsmen.

Lawson played in the first test, but his return of figures were not that good so the Windies selectors have some thinking to do.

Stats aren't everything. Lawson bowled impressively in the first Test (IMO), especially his first spell.

I heard Jimmy Adams having a rant on TV the other night about the dearth of quality spin bowling in the West Indies.

He was quite vociferous in his opinion that there is insufficient financial backing given to youngsters who show a leaning towards the 'guile' as opposed to the 'grunt'.

I thought Liam's article 'Pace comes in four' was very interesting indeed, but whereas back in the 70's and 80's the West Indies seemed to have an endless conveyor belt of quality seamers (I could name 8 or 9 who would get into any test side now - even Australia - at least one or two at a time), the supply appears to have largely dried up.

However, in my opinion, 4 seamers is only a balanced attack when they are ALL world class. Test cricket needs, nay DEMANDS quality spinners.

Is it that there are so many other distractions from the great game of cricket nowadays in the West Indies (football, basketball etc) or is it just a 'natural cycle' which prevents the West Indies from developing a quality spinner? Or could Jimmy Adams be right inasmuch as they just cannot receive backing when they need it?

Has there even BEEN a quality West Indian spinner since Lance Gibbs?

Good grief, I'm so old. I can remember 'Those little pals of mine, Ramadhin and Valentine'.

Incidentally, for 'West Indies' read 'England' and for 'Gibbs' read 'Underwood'.

Once again the AUS yet to lose a wicket. Can't imagine what happens to India when India goes there.

Australia 174-0 (Jimmy Maher 85 not out, Justin Langer 80 not out).

Quality bowler in FC Cricket, just not quality often enough in Tests :(

He suffered where Vettori is suffering now, orthodox finger spinners just arn't consistantly effective in Test Cricket. Don't really get enough turn. Note Harbhajan Singh and Saqlain Mushtaq are unorthodox finger spinners.

I guess the NZ tour comes up before that. We should try out our combo for Aus tour in that one.
Murali Karthik should get in and give Bhajji a fight for his place.

Rik, the guys you call 'orthodox finger spinners' simply aren't good enough.
I used to consider Vettori a promising bowler once. Now he's just a stock bowler. Completely ineffective.
Teams that haven't had one good spinner for as long as I can recall:
WI, SA, England, NZ.
That's WAY too many.
Note that Zimbabwe has done much better. Some of their spinners, however inconsistent looked better bowlers than the English and SA spinners to me.
SA had Symcox, who was effective sometimes.

Aussies' major strength is in their pace attack but they seem to produce good spinners too. Where did the new Brad Hogg come from! He sucked six seven years back.

The reason Hoggy got a game was because of the fact he had a very good outing against England for Australia A. (3/39 off 10). He was spinning the ball a mile on the SCG pitch.

Warne did his shoulder and he was the most in-form bowler available at the time, ahead just of Nathan Hauritz from Queensland.

Other spinners coming through include Cameron White (gun) from Victoria and Xavier Doherty from Tasmania.

Ramnarine, IMO is a very good spinner, but due to inexplicable non-selection and now personal problems, his talent has been wasted.

Mukesh Persad has been the best spinner in the region both statistically and in quality for the last ten years, yet he never even made a provisional squad. Why, you may ask? Those brilliant selectors.

Dave Mohammed is an excellent prospect.
