I agree with those...

Test player to bat for my life: Waugh
ODI player to bat for my life: Klusner

And I agree with Leglancer. While Waugh may not be as good of a batsman as Boycott or Gavaskar, he certainly has enough guts to take him anywhere. There are two things, most important of all, that matter to a great batsman, and that's skill and courage. If I had to have someone bat for my life, I'd rather he have the latter. It's not like Waugh's lacking in skill either - he's a good choice :P

Amazing how the topic evolves!

For the record, is this the first Test in Steve Waugh's career which hasn't been rain affected but he hasn't made it to the middle in?

Players to bat for my life ?

Finally with great difficulty I decided on the pair.

1) GAVASKER

2) BOYCOTT

Any comments ?
I'd pick Boycs only for the added effect of his boring the opposition to the point where they'd rather kill themselves.

Will the W.I. hold out? What does everyone think? I reckon their chances evaporated when Hinds was unluckily bowled.

To be honest, I thought the declaration came too soon. 407 is possible whereas 450 would have been somewhere nearer to impossible.

However, at 3 wickets down, I'd say the WI don't have much of a show, even if Lara scores a ton.

Good Pick aussie beater ... I thought about Steve Waugh myself and he was one of the front runners. Steve is definitely a better batsman than Boycott or arguably even Gavaskar. However I realized that "the best" or the "most talented" batsman is not the batsman I want to bat for my life. I would like a batsman who values his wicket more than Gold Itself.. to bat for my life .... Someone who with doggad determination and will bat with MINIMUM RISK and MAXIMUM PERSEVERANCE !
I would put Steve Waugh in such a list, but no way is he a better batsman than Gavaskar. The batsmen who you want to bat for your life would include IMO(from players I have seen):

Gavaskar
Boycott
Waugh
Border
Miandad...

Coming back to the topic, 300 runs on the fifth day with Lara, Sarwan and Samuels around.....think it's possible? I'm pretty sure Lara will make a go for it rather than trying to hold on for a draw....looks like it could be a pretty exciting 5th day, doesn't it?

No team has scored 407 in the 4th innings to win a match. The highest 4th innings winning score is 406 made by India against WI in 1976, and guess what ? .....it was scored in this same ground in Port of Spain. So if WI breaks that record and wins this match, it would be quite a remarkable coincidence.

Then again, records are there to be broken :P

But I do realize the difficulty of the situation. It'll take a Laracle ;)

Just looking at a composite top 6 - if PWC are to be believed it would be:

Vaughan (1)
Trescothick (18)
Hussain (22)
Lara (8)
Stewart (21)
Chanderpaul (14)

Then there's Butcher (25), Thorpe (26), Hooper (27), Gayle (33)...

PWC rankings are based on current form or performance over there recent matches it's not the best indication really.

I wonder is Ponting will go to number 1 in PWC ranks after this match 206 & 45 will get him close.

Lara should go up a fair bit as well especialy if he makes a 100 in this innings.

Looking at the ratings, I think Lara will end up ahead of Ponting after this game, but the fact that it's a good wicket for runs will devalue the scores somewhat.

Yeah you are right if Lara makes runs tomorow he will go higher than Ponting because of the strength of oposition.

I also read somwere Vaugahn will have to avrage 70-80 in the series Vs Zimbabwe to keep his ranking as long as those below him maintain there current ratings. tough ask :0

Not necessarily a tough ask....not against the current Zimbabwean bowling.
