Cactus - according to the above post, Australia are the favorites.

Sri Lanka won the toss and are batting.

BTW does anyone else think day/ night games in the sub-contenent are rubbish??

I hate them most of the time they favor the team batting first way to much IMO.

Gillespie's got the first two wickets. His ball to get Atapattu out was amazing, it cut back beautifully.

Gillespie has always bowled very good off cutters.

Exellent spells by him and Kaspa.

Excellent Match by both teams .... Australia is finding out that its not a cake walk in Sri Lanka. However you've got to give it to them for a great perfomance.

A competitive match but another mixed bag perfomance from our SL boys, not the 100% intensity required to knock over the Australians. To be honest our batting was not satisfactory especially from our openers who fire one match and go completely cold the next. I long for the day when Sanath is smashing the ball over the boundary World Cup 96 style! However my real respect goes out to da maan, Mahela Jayawardene. After his confidence hit rock bottom after the World Cup 2003 I never thought he would be able to regain his classical form, especially after the long string of single digit scores. However he has proved his great class with this stylish 80 and is now getting back his style, timing and most importantly his confidence against the best team in the world. I hope he can now convert his great potential and talent to some consistent scores. It was also promising to see the lower batsman chipping in with a few runs especially Kumar Dharmasena and Chaminda Vaas who have come up with vital extra runs to push Sri Lanka's scores over the 200 mark. However there was no meat to are batting. We are lacking a pair of batsman who can really string together solid partnerships. I am very disappointed with Russel Arnold because he used to be very solid and aggressive in the middle order but he seems to have lost something.

The total was never going to be enough to trouble the Australians and to make matters worst are bowling was poor. Does it only seem to be Vaas who is troubling the opposition and knocking back the wickets? Our spin attack has become something of a joke now. I have never seen Muralitharan have such a neutral impact on a cricket match. It is better to give away runs and take wickets rather bowl 10 overs giving away 43 runs without wickets. Have the Australians (especially Ponting and Symonds) developed an effective technique against the big man? Anyway I feel SL's bowling is the biggest let down. Vaas is as usual proving people wrong and rooting out the world's best batsman. What happen to Gilchrist man? Finally his weak technique has been exposed to quality seam/swing bowling!

In the series Sri Lanka's top order have finally started to put in some good performances but the main problem and usually the downfall with SL is the batting collapses which tend to be more ridiculous than India's! However overall we are showing better fighting spirit and we won't just let the other team walk on us like dogs in the street. Australia beware for the test matches, I have a feeling they will not be able to cope as well with the longer matches where pitches will detiorate more rapidly assisting Muralitharan to spin his magic.:cool2:

It's no secret that Gilchrist can be troubled by quality left armers. Vaas has done it to him before (CUB series 98/99), Alan Mullaly in the same series. Also some right armers from around the wicket.

Would someone be able to find out the statistics of Clarke/Symonds partnerships? I am intrigued. I think they would have a very, very favourable record. They bat very well together.

Very true your point about Gilchrist. I have seen he is almost hopeless when batting against Wasim Akram. He ends up hitting with the left armer's natural angle and spooning the ball in the air. I believe Gilchrist's batting technique is built around about 20% skill and 80% luck. I hate the way he can bat so wrecklessly and still maintain his healthy ODI average of 36. Wrecklessness is the name of the game for the worlds greatest wicketkeeper batsman, Romesh Kaluwitharana (:D ) but his average is only 22. Maybe Gilchrist has more power. However he really does bat like a blind man against left handers. The fool tries slogging left handers like playing a right handed bowler and gets out. His arrogance really is something amazing because his technique is rubbish. He may have succeeded but compared to someone like Matthew Hayden who can back up his arrogance with a brilliant technique he is nothing. Australia should forget Gilchrist, how many chances do you want to give him? Axe this joker, replace him with a specialist wicket keeper and play Langer as the opener. That is my advice for Australia. Listen to me and your team will be technically superior (not to mention doomed to failure!).

Hey LankanPrince what About Zoyza ??? I thought he was quite the "heavy Hitter" in the SL team and could clear the ropes quite well .... why didnt they send him in earlier ???? maybe instead of Arnold ?
