Apply your theory to the 'great' Darren Gough and I think you will find he is inconsistent. Highly overrated and an inconsistent (wickets and fitness wise) bowler. According to you he should be no better than Vaas. And also he hasn't performed consistently in the pressure situation i.e. the World Cup tournament 2003 where Vaas got 18 odd wickets. I recall Master Gough is too tied up with fitness problems to partake in this tournament? So just before you criticise Vaas apply your theory to Gough and tell me a little about him.:D

Who ever mentioned Gough? You're the only one who mentioned him.

I've not evem mentioned him until now, but if you really want to compare them then OK.

In Tests, they have the same number of wickets, but the difference is Gough averages 28.39 compared with Vaas' 30.12.
Also, Gough has played 13 matches less.

In ODI's, Gough's got 188 wickets in 121 matches @ 24.96, Vaas has 288 in 230 @ 27.01

So if Gough is overrated, what is Vaas (note that the only one who mentioned Gough in this thread is you)

18 wickets yes, but look a bit closer:
0-22 vs NZ
6-25 vs Ban
3-15 vs Can
3-41 vs Ken
4-22 vs WI
0-33 vs SA
0-59 vs Aus
2-34 vs Ind
2-46 vs Zim
3-34 vs Aus

OK, so someone has to take the wickets against the weaker sides, but what happened when he got to the pressure games against the big sides - not so hot then was he - in fact that Tournament seems to add to the inconsistent claims.

He was injured yes, and that is a reason to criticise him now is it?

Well, you brought him into the equation, and I think I've shown he's got a much better record over his career in either format, so why exactly did you bring him in?

its gonna be a different story for the aussies when murali bowls 100 overs per match. in my opinion many aussie players are weak or havent proven themselves against spin:gilchrist, martyn, symonds and lehmann. it will be a real test to see if they can adapt and pick up muralis new ball(i know its a ****ing chuck)
Lehmann is one of the best players of spin going around, Gilchrist isn't too bad, symonds is pretty good but wont play in all likleyhood, and Martyn will suck, his footwork is pretty bad against spinners

Against the top 3 sides in the world, those aren't bad figures at all in the World Cup. I don't know how that proves his inconsistency. He had one bad game against the Aussies, thats hardly inconsistent.

Marc I think you're clutching at straws with this argument.

Against NZ, NZ were something like 34/4 & Vaas didn't really need to take wickets because the other bowlers were doing the job...but to then only conceed 22 while Styris smashed 141 is quite an achievement also.

Symonds is deffinatly a good player of spin or has looked that way when I have seen him but batting in the sub-contenent is vastly diffrent.

Gilly is exeptional once the close catchers have gone but untill then he is quite valnerable.

Lehmann has been a brilliant player of spin all his carear but again mostly on Australian wickets.

North plays for WA he is avraging well over 100 in the ING cup this year and over 50 in the Pura cup.

He also made a brilliant hundred for Australia A against Zimbabwe opening the batting at the Adelade oval.

Join the club mate, North is gold. No real obvious weaknesses in his game. Hits well over the top, plays spin and pace both well (although not spin early on).

Nope. 'Hara' is a Japanese word (albeit slightly rude) for stomach. 'Kiri' is the act of cutting. So 'Hara-Kiri' is the act of cutting one's stomach.

I can speak very good Japanese and I doubt you will challenge me further on this. :P
Well you learn something new everyday 8D

Bichel worked him over in Brisbane, admitadely North did get 130 odd, but there were alot of edges and mistimed shots, but you are right he has got talent. North's last five balls consisted of Bichel feeding him inswingers around the wicket and North kept leaving them until Bichel bowled him.

Give it up man he isn't that inconsistent. How many damn matchwinning performances do you want from him before you class him as consistent? According to your criteria a bowler has to take loads of wickets every match and have nice, attractive stats to be consistent. Vaas may not haul in loads of wickets but he is the most consistent SL bowler around, he is usually on the money when even Muralitharan fails. He is also has to put up with flat, lifeless SL pitches. If you want to talk about inconsistent bowlers lets start with some proclaimed English 'greats' cough cough Darren Gough, Andrew Caddick and the biggest one of the all Dominic Cork! I don't see why he is praised so much, he takes 7 wickets in his first game then he does squat for England in his next 8 years. These guys get to bowl on nice, friendly green pitches, have never been vital to Englands success and are pretty much retired anyway! So if you look at it Vaas he can't be that inconsistent.
dude u obviously have no clue what ur talking about. im not arguing abt the fact that vaas isnt a 'good' bowler but dont go on to say that gough wasnt great!sure he had problems with his fitness but he was a better bowler at the death than vaas will ever be. as far as these guys getting to bowl on green wickets, how many wickets did vaas get on those same green wickets on his last 2 tours of england???also darren gough was the pick of the fast bowlers from either side on the pak and sl tour of 00-01 so at least he has bowled well all over the world.

Sorry, you're trying to say that Vaas isn't one of the most inconsistent players in World Cricket?

That kind of contradicts itself there - and dare I suggest he didn't concede many against Styris because Vaas bowled his 7 overs at the start of the innings when NZ were trying to rebuild after the early wickets?

Styris faced 21 balls of Vaas' 42 balls and scored 12 runs. During the period when Vaas was operating to Styris, he scored 19 runs off 11 balls from the other bowlers.

After Vaas came off, he scored 19 runs off 23 balls, then went on to score 91 runs off 70 balls.

OK once again you have proved me wrong, which is what I like to see. I think I will put to rest my opinions on Vaas because every time someone mentions him as 'inconsistent' I feel the need to criticise their view (partly because he is one of my favourite bowlers). Sorry but this is just my annoying nature:D. So if we are going to talk about Vaas talk about his performance related to the current series with Australia, after all the series is the topic of the thread. If we want to argue about Vaas past consistency there should be a separate thread for it. BTW I will also retract my statements made about Gough as I no very little fact about him, hope I I didn't offend anyone. Hopefully we can now focus on the interestingly balanced series we now have between SL and Aus. Thanx.:)
