I agree with the last statement, but what do you make of ponting persisting with him ?? I would have benched him after his 4th over.
That was one thing that was bugging me, especially when Lewis had gone for 72 off his 7 and Michael Clarke had gone for 49 off his 7. Looked like Clarke and Symonds, the spinners, were doing collectively a better job, giving 5/6/7 an over while Stuart Clark and Mick Lewis were getting carted all over. I was expecting Ponting to go give Clarke the remaining 3 Lewis overs or even try out Hussey and Martyn. They couldn't have been any worse than Lewis and Clark, who together went for 167 runs in 16 overs.

Ponting and whoever he discussed this decision with were probably the only people in the world that thought Lewis should've been brought back on last night.

However, that decision did not cost Aus the match.

Brilliant batting from Gibbs, appalling bowling from everybody, a couple of dodgy umpiring decisions and a ridiculous team selection combined to do so.
It was a combination of things. However, I still stand by my claim that, regardless of what happened in the previous 94 overs, but for Ponting inexplicably bowling Lewis out, we would have won the game.

Aus lost a match that, in the scheme of things, will do them more good than harm where the WC is concerned.
I agree with that. Hopefully the selectors will take a reality check, and take a dispassionate view of things. Stubborness and pride (which I think has been why Katich has been retained) have no place at the selection table. Selectors should be dispassionate.

Of more significance is the performance of our selectors.

Questions need to asked as to:

a. why Lewis was ever awarded an ACB contract, let alone play for Aus in the first place

b. why Watson, one of our best in the first 3 games, was dropped from the final 2

c. why Hogg, one of our most consistent performers of the past few years was dropped against a team that is weak against spin

d. why Martyn was played if he was only going to bat at 6 at the highest

e. why Martyn was selected for the tests when he is so out of touch that he is being shuffled down the batting order

f. why Johnson was selected when he if he was only going to be given 3 overs on tour to prove his worth when he could have been bowling a hundred or more overs in the Pura Cup
Very good questions. We're asking sub-standard OD players (Clark, Lewis, Katich etc) to win us a World Cup.

you could even have bowled katich, the spinners seemed to be doing better than the meadium pacers. if he went for 9 or 10 so what? lewis was going for more than that & at least you've tried. why wasn't hogg in this game?

He must smell or something because he was taking vital wickets in the first few matches then when ponting came back into the side he did not want to bowl him. So there was not much use having him in the side. Hog has consistenly taken wickets at vital times for australia and he has troubled the southies all summer, yes he should have played, but then again it should not have mattered. Watson should have played instead of martyn , but again it should not have had to come to that.

ha, this is funny so let me get this straight. When Australia set bangladesh, the weakest team in the world 250 odd to win last year with our bowling attack it was being arrogant to think we would win, aslo when we set NZ 332 to win in auckland looking at the fact that australia had beaten NZ 7 straight ODI's before that match even though it was an inexperienced attack & yesterday when we set SA 434 bloody runs it was arrogant to think we would win even though their batting was strong?

Oh now i get it:sleep:
That's got nothing to do with it.

It's all about kicking a man (or team) when he's down, it shouldn't happen, your outlandish posts reeked of arrogance. Obviously not a believer in karma.

Now you're here bagging the collective team out, obviously not a true Australian supporter.

You should probably mention what game it is, though. Although I doubt it'll matter, it's not as if anyone will remember Lewis for anything else.

I`ve never been so close to crying over a game of cricket!

Lewis was absolutely horrible. I hated watching him bowl. Bracken was amazing, and I was very happy to see him with his 5-for.

But far out. Ridiculous match, in the true sense of the word. Incredible scoring, I still can`t believe we lost. Bangladesh, Ashes, This.

Why do you do this to me cricket?!

But... I own Aussie. :D
