Yeah it's a total replay of Perth 2012 so far, where both first innings were around 250 and Amla came out and bitchslapped Australia out of the series.

No AB to downhill ski this time though. :p
South Africa had Smith then and he tore into Starc and Hastings up front. Can't see Elgar or Cook doing the same. Open with de Kock?

I'd say it was Steven Smith's wicket which turned the tables, the bowlers were rejuvenated after that.

Zero overs from Duminy BTW. He's playing as a specialist number 4, which is ****ing woeful. He's definitely going to have to bowl in the second innings with Steyn gone.
tbf I wouldn't have brought a part-timer on at any point in those two sessions either. You're running through them and don't have many runs on the board - just gun it full throttle with Rabada and Philander while Mahraj is doing a job holding up an end. Pretty good captaincy IMO. We'd be lambasting him if he did bring Duminy or Elgar on.

you already take a risk when advancing 3 metres down your crease(miss it and your stumped). so i feel sad it's now not a safe LBW defense. Padding up is truly a dead art - and yes it was an art haters. just as much as leaving the ball is

Lol still going on about this.
Na just pad up when it's not in line and hitting the stumps

would rather the boundaries pushed back and bat restrictions put in place before 'brave decisions' like this become the norm. i am aware the game is in favour of the batsmen now but still this feels like fighting dirty

KP brought it up in the tea break in my defence, said it was a dangerous precedent. made me think about it again ( i thought everyone watches the lunch and tea interval coverage)

Why can't we have both?

Whatever it takes!!!
Yeah the art of padding up is to be able to judge that the ball is not going to hit the stumps. Not sure why it is an art to come down the track and just pad up to a full ball which will definitely blast into the stumps if the pads were not on the way.

Well tbf South Africa did have a clear first-innings lead there. Fair point overall though.

Just think about how unlucky you have to be to get out doing that though. The ball would have to pitch, hit and travel perfectly to be out. It's almost impossible for a delivery from that angle to hit the pad that far out of the crease in line and still be hitting the stumps.

what a match.

momentum is with saffers which can change quickly.
The only thing going against SA is Steyn missing. Otherwise I'd have them on top.

Thing is, Smith didn't even get his front leg fully extended. Ball caught his pad quicker than he expected imo.
