Because the choking explanation is the easy, armchair psychology one, which precludes discussion of the the actual underlying issues. Most of the time, it's a lazy cop-out. Obviously there are occasions (like '99 WC SF) when it is completely blatant and no other explanation fits.

Sure it can be lazy armchair psychology. But that's not what was happening in this thread. We all discussed SA's pathetic bowling plenty and pretty much everyone agreed thats what lost them the game. Don't know why people feel the need to bring in other silly message boards and Cricinfo etc. into the discussion to make their point at all. It's not relevant.

^ That's an unnecessarily cheap attack. I was very clear from all my posts that I was talking about South Africa choking in general today. The specific match discussion already took place yesterday and it was specific to the match only. When the conversation became more about choking in general and not specific to the match, that's when I made that post.

And yes even if we leave out non CW discussions, even on CW we have rarely talked about South Africa's chasing woes and I got attacked for saying South Africa are not a very good ODI side because of their poor chasing in the ODI rankings thread. The fact is this and you know it. Most people are not even aware that how bad their chasing record is. It's never talked about when South Africa is assessed as a LO side. It's been going on for eons now but somehow South Africa is always this great great side who only inexplicably lose World Cup knockouts because they choke.

Behardien lobbing a ball back to the bowler slower than a 12 year old girl because of the pressure is literally the definition of a choke. Doesn't matter what level a cricketer he is and he is not established in the team, he significantly underperformed a simple task to well below international standard due to the match situation.

Everyone said India choked vs. Aus when they were 1 for gazillion needing bugger all to win, and lost in embarrassing fashion. The sensitivity around it is weird. Not every SA loss is a choke. No one said the first two ODI losses to England were chokes.

SA`s main problem is we are only going in with 3 genuine bowlers, this will lose us matches at international level as you need only one/two opposition batsmen to take advantage..

SA best team is probably the following:
QDK, Amla, AB, Faf, Miller, Wiese, Morris, Steyn, Rabada, Abbott, Tahir... even though I would prefer Rossouw in for either Morris/Wiese.

This however will not be the team played, as at least one or both of Behardien and Duminy will play for non-cricketing reasons.

Yesterday 4 played, Duminy, Behardien, Rabada and Tahir (debatable) the unofficial quota is 4 with at least one "black" player, (thank goodness for Rabada).

My team has only 3, Amla, Rabada and Tahir (debatable). I state debatable as he is not originally a SA citizen and thus falling in with the previously "disadvantage" South Africans.

No he has been the worse of all the SA bowlers used in t20 internationals over the last 2 years hence why he wasn't picked.

And its so sad.. becasue I remember an IPL (cant remember the year) where he was probably the best bowler, he kept bowling fantastic back of a length stuff with perfect yorkers... then he suddenly stopped doing this and started to just suck.

I`ve just been watching some of the highlights of KG bowling this summer and the thing that impresses me the most is the variation he already has and, importantly, the intelligence in using them... at 20!
His potential to do great things is huge, I just hope he continuous on and does them.

I would agree with this 100%... except Duminy is so out of form I don`t think he could hit a football under-armed to him at the moment. And his saving grace of being a half-decent 2nd spinner has gone to absolute ****.... causing SA huge balance issues. I think he will still make the team though due to his experience in Indian conditions, hopefully he comes good soon.... also I just hope the selectors realize they have to play Amla and QDK , with AB at 3 or 4... it makes the batting line-up so much more potent.

PS: I am aware I put a team up that included Morris instead of Duminy earlier in the thread.... its just Duminys form the worries me...

Wiese was always going to get pulverized on a true bouncy hard wicket like that. Bowling 5 out of 6 cutters on a wickets like that was never going to save him. You've got to imagine just how his stats with the ball have added up to what they are ? He must have played the majority of his games on dry/tired wickets gripping surely !

Yeah Duminy, where is his head at ? The way he pulled that - you either out or its 6 when you pull from underneath the ball. He just hit a 6 so surely with 2-men out you just try and hit down on it and give Faf the strike again. Come on, senior player. Better then Behardien mind. Badly want Rossouw to get a run of games.
