nah I don't mind taking the wearther into account - often when you make a declaration you want to really tire out the opposition first by keeping them in the field for ages. I'm pretty sure Smith had the weather in mind when he decided to declare early in the day.

Otherwise he might've batted till just before tea.

Yeah, sorry I probably didn't word my post very well. For sure you can have the forecast at the back of your mind but I don't think it can totally rule the call. I daresay Smith did call it possibly earlier than he would if the forecast was fine......but whoever it was slating his defensive mindset last night was carrying on from ball one that he should be bowling. Assuming the forecast was correct for little to no play today then I guess Smith did take a chance because I doubt even he saw the last session going like it did.

So he kinda hedged his bets, batted for as long as he dared, getting the runs he was comfortable with and putting as many miles on the Aussie bowlers legs as he could, whilst not taking the forecast as verbatim and banking for enough play today to get the job done.

Dhoni(even though not making the early declaration) made the mistake of sacrificing wickets for quick runs and enabled SA to draw the first Test and win the second. If he had batted for a bit longer in those Tests instead of going for quick runs, result would have been different. In fact he was misled by the weather forcast for the last day of the second Test and didn't expect SA to have sufficient time to chase any target

Reminds me of Top Cat writing off Jacques Kallis after his 2007 England series.

That's right TC, I'll never let that one go!
Ah, I've written off just about every player, FFS.

Agree it's premature to write off Clarke. I know people are mentioning Taylor's slump but Clarke's got a long way to go before he reaches that level. It wasn't the number of Tests with Taylor, his slump just seemed to go on foreverrrrrr.

If todays weather prediction was going to be fine smith would have batted as long as possible... aus bowled over 200 overs in this game and siddle and harris looked battered even at the start of the of the fourth day.

Kyle Abbott has been called up to replace Parnell in the squad after his match haul of 12 in Paarl this week.

Quinton also remains, as does Virus.

Also, the rain has just arrived in PE. So it looked like they would have had the whole of the first session.

Difficult to know what the weather will bring and the timing in PE due to the wind.

IIRC the drainage at PE is pretty terrible and it did rain last night, so I can't be certain about a full session.
According to some of the scribes still in PE, play would have been good to go on time.

But you are right, the drainage isn't as good as the Wanderers and Centurion but it looked like the rain stopped early enough in the morning to recover.

Hey what ever happened to Marchant de Lange? Bloke looked like Terminator. I still remember his 7-fer in a losing cause at home vs. SL.

Injury problems. A change in action. Etcetera. He might come back to form, but he's not in the crosshairs at this time - not even for the franchise sides.
