Lawry is a great commentator.

He would've ruled it at the end of yesterday's game, just like he ruled it when we won at Telstra Dome.

Perhaps I just like this voice. I like the South African rugby commentators for that reason.

I can't stand Greig, but at least he's stopped trying to flog lithographs.

None of them are as bad as the English rugby league commentators.

That is a large improvement and its good to see because he's an exciting player. Its also great to see a player you've loyally supported for a long time do well. I mean, how long has Vincent been in your avatar :p

Lol Bill Lawry a great commentator? BANG!!!!!!

He talks no sense, although I will admit he does get excited. Lawry constantly talks down the opposition and anything Australia do is god-like. He is so biased that I actually find him amusing and don't mind him in the box but he doesn't make too many 'great' comments.

Smith knows a lot about the game. I guess I just appreciate his opinion on game situations, players techniques and plans etc.

Out of the channel 9 lot I like Greig would be my favourite (when he actually talks cricket) with Benaud and Chappel close behind.

Healy and Tubby have their moments but overall are fairly dull.. Slats deserves a spot on the team.
It's amazing that you have this perception of Lawry. If anything, he has an overriding habit of barracking for the underdog - he annoys the crap out of me personally, but I certainly wouldn't describe him as biased towards Australia. Certainly not in comparison to the other Aussie commentators (particularly Chapelli).

And I think Smith is one of the worst I've ever heard. Either completely depressed, disinterested and silent, or loud, smug and ebullient, dependent on NZ's fortunes in the match.

Agree mostly with the rest. I like Greiggy too, and would happily have Slats over Heals or Tubby.

In terms of being able to come in and do a job, I'd say a side like NZ does have a better depth.
Really? Not to insult our Kiwi friends (they're all wonderful people), but I'd have thought New Zealand, minnows aside, would be one of the teams with the least depth.

Fair enough. Although if Stuart Clark is near the top of the list of reserves then i think Marc could probably make a pretty good case. The cynic would say that Australia's "depth" consists of

Stuart MacGill.

If this conversation was about onedayers, which it probably was, then i withdraw completely and apologise for intruding.
It was about ODIs (and Clark is at least getting decent figures in the matches he's played), but as to tests: I'm not that cynical, and I think of myself as an optimist.

So, Stuart MacGill and Jason Gillespie. :p

I'm not saying that we have a clutch of "international ready" players - but it's always been a struggle to find genuinely international-class bowlers, while really promising bats in this era seem to be a dime-a-dozen. Nonetheless, there's some promise there and I don't think we're doing too badly, and I think somebody would struggle to find countries that are significantly better equipped in terms of reserves down the list after McGrath, Warne, Lee, MacGill, Bracken, Gillespie, etc. The whole "lack of depth" thing is just a bit of a snipe anyway, and I don't think there's a substantive issue, relative to other teams.

If the point is merely "you guys are certainly going to be a lot more beatable when you don't have McGrath and Warne", then, duh. They're two of the top three bowlers in the world, so of course the loss is going to be greater than for teams who don't have players of that stature.

On Lawry, I think he's only developed his underdog-backing thing in the last few years. I started noticing it on some of the more recent tours of Australia (such as our last trip over there) - he was doing things like making issues out of lbw decisions against the tourists, getting excited when NZ/tourists were doing well and gushing about the talents of a Vettori or a Dravid or whoever else happened to be there. He definately used to be blatantly one-eyed about things, especially when it came to dear old Warnie, but I agree that he has started barracking for the underdog now.

Agree on Smith as well. These days, he either makes a reasonable point but then kills it by going on and on about it for the rest of the series or he just sits there quietly and only throws in the odd snide comment.

Ian Smith is a very good commentator, him along with Coney are NZ's best. Danny Morrison on the other hand....less of him the better.

Michael Slater is an excellent commentator. Was very happy to tune into the ING match today on tv and hear him commentating....and having a bit of banter with Tubby.

Coney is OK, but he's another one who gets hung up on the slightest detail. He sweats over every ball, whereas a commentator like Holding will go silent & only bring up a point if it's valid over the course of several deliveries.

Coney is fixed to his microphone. They're inseparable. It must blow his mind when the next ball is different from the last.

I have been totally against Hamish Marshalls selection over the lsat year but that last innings of his showed some form and he looked pretty good. After that innings I think maybe he should be selected for Sri Lanka series but drop Craig McMillan like he was last year and I think Ryder or Fulton must come in the squad now. How is replacing McMillan going to ruin there World Cup plans.

I can't really argue with too much there. I can definetly see where you are coming from with Smith. I would imagine that for an ovevseas viewer he musn't be that great to listen to.

I do find Lawry biased but have also noticed his developing trait of making a point of trying to sound neutral. It is when a big decision or a big moment comes along that I see his Australian hat come on. I may have been a bit over the top before but a classic was when we were playing you guys in a ODI last year and Lawry started to try and jinx us in the final overs.
