I'll still give the Marshalls one more game to prove themselves. Hamish looked comfortable before being fooled by a lower one. Keep the same squad, but with the additions of Fleming and Bond into the XI. Bond for Franklin and Fleming for McMillan who just ****es me off with his continuous unsuccessful attempts to guide it to 3rd man.

It's not easy trying to look for a 4 in the last over of the game. What a stupid thing to say. Of course it's ideal to go for a 4 or a 6 early in the over, but let's be realistic. When you are in a 6 off 6 situation, most would avoid risks and take singles hoping it would come down to a 2 off 2 where you would then have the chance for going over the 30m circle without any risk.
Why avoid risks when we still had 2 wickets in hand? If McCullum had got caught on the boundary going for a 4 then Mills and Vettori would still have been capable of working the singles for the remainder of the over.

It is just my opinion of the approach I would take. Trying to look for a boundary is actually pretty easy, executing it is the hard part but McCullum is an innivative batsman

You are right most NZers probably would look for a singles off every ball, it didn't seem to work last night though did it? I bet if the situation was reversed then the Aussies would have killed the game off early by looking towards the fence in the first couple of balls.

Clarke's run-out was one of the best I have seen, under pressure. Quite frankly, that won them the game. It's all very well to criticise the batsmen but when a guy knocks the stumps over at the bowlers end from way down at point..thats almost genius.

NZ's confidence is low, its remarkable they even made it to 300 but 5 or 6 players dug deep and they can at least go to Christchurch knowing they have restored some pride.

McMillan is an idiot, he has to go, it's as simple as that. James Marshall needs to go back to Domestic level and there is the possibility that Hamish needs a break too. Astle is a concern, but out of all of them..I reckon he's the most likely to come good.
Kyle Mills has impressed me, ok he got hammered in his final 2 overs but up until then he had been bowling really well so hopefully he continues some good form.

You people down-grading Lee are kidding yourselves!

Aus got 320+

Lee starts the innings by bowling 155 ks.

NZ respond in the only possible manner - they have a go!

Vincent had a slog and got away with it!

People talked about the NZ batsmen being "scared" after the first game (utter rubbish as we all know), but name 1 player that got in line tonight.

Lee bowled seriously quick again tonight.

A person bowling really quick on a tiny ground is bound to go for runs sooner rather than later.

The kiwis had a swing and got away with it.

End of story.
Yes but his thing recently (and to be fair he did make improvements against WI) was to bowl slower but more accurately - this was hardly that, was it?

I think we should keep Hamish Marshall in for the next game, as Ming said he was looking alright before he got one that kept low.

Any news about Vincent's injury? He was in a bit of pain last night, hope he's right by Saturday.

It was great to see a few batsmen actually back their ability for once. It appears Vincent has decided to change his batting attitude entirely..and if its in the slot he's going to go after it. Well, someone had to do it because I couldn't stand watching all of our batsmen block & nudge much longer.

I think we can only afford to have Vincent & Hamish Marshall in the team, James is just too similar and I think we need someone who can be more dominent at the crease like a Fulton or Ryder.
McMillan, well if it weren't for lack of options he'd be well out of the team.

The point I think he was making was that Brett Lee didn't change his bowling much from the first game to this one (aside from the brain explosion in the 49th over). In that game he took 3/5 and in this one 1/85. When you bowl as aggressively as he does and at that speed on a much smaller ground, especially when NZ took the more aggressive road, that's what can happen. Next time they or someone else will try the same thing and he'll take 5-fer. He didn't bowl badly, they just got away from him. It happens.

Either way, Brett Lee has 211 wickets at around 22 in 117 ODI's and 39 wickets at 18.71 during the last year. Even if you don't have terribly accurate bowlers around you, you can't buy that sort of wicket-taking ability.

He was seriously the reason why NZ had a moral victory last night. That was a great knock and indeed he seems to be changing; when he was playing in Adelaide, he never EVER played like he did last night. Was always far too correct for that. If he can do that consistently, I think NZ may have found the attacking opener to partner Astle they've been craving for so long.

what a game that was (yesterday morning UK time), the kiwis really surprised me at the end to set up one of the best ODI's i've ever seen. Symo was absolutely devasting the way he paced that innings was superb & he made Clarke look really pedestrial out their.

With regards to the aussie seamers well Lee was up & down & was really carted at the end & i thought he last over had cost australia but Lewis was good in the last over seemed a veteran. Bracken was disappointing IMO, while Clark was pretty good the best of the bowlers on the night

Lol tell Shaun Pollock, Justin Kemp or Mark Boucher that.
In that situation last night, with only 2 wickets to go. If McCullum had tried to go for a 6, and got caught, I'm sure you would have been the first one to say what an idiot he was trying to win the game from the first ball.

Much smaller ground? Auckland is pretty small was Wellington smaller?
Eden Park is by far the smallest.

I want to see Ryder come in for McMillan for the SL series as well. And Fleming for James Marshall, and that would be about right.

dont see how, if he had kept hogg on in the mood Cairns was he, he could have been carted...

Didn't see the match, but however badly Lee bowled, dropping him would be ridiculous. Coming into this game he had something like 53 wickets @ 18 with an eco of 4.2 for the year. About as good a year for an express bowler in ODIs you will ever see.
exactly, i dont see how he can be called the dumbest bowler after one bad performace like that after he has been bowling absolutely superbly in ODI's all year, he just simply lost it yesterday.

And Fulton or Sinclair for Hamish Marshall
I still believe he has alot to offer. You don't mantain an ODI average of 40 for 2 years and score a 150 against Australia and another 100 against SL if you're a hopeless bugger. He's just going through a bad patch, and hopefully like Hayden, he can get himself out of it with a few big centuries.... :)
