Test-match batting partnership. Good pitch, see off the new ball, bat for hours and hours. Good lesson for Latham / Nicholls / Anderson. Williamson and Watling know how to do this.

There's no reason to think Australia won't get a 200+ lead, which would really bring Lyon into the game on days 4 & 5.

Question for the Aussie blokes; what does a typical grade cricketer average if they're considered a good bat over there?

Interesting hour, seeing how much life is still in the surface with the new ball. Great innings by Smith, the sort of partnership Australia has rarely been able to put together away from home in recent years, got through some good bowling and a bit of sideways movement and capitalised when set. Definitely shouldn't lose from here.

Lyon's been in the game from day 1. 3 wickets on day 1 in Wgtn, 3 wickets on day 1 here. IIRC all 6 were taken with flight, not spin.

Just dry them up. Every ball a foot outside off stump. Stack the off side field.
Agree.

Not quite the type of cricket the crowd are expecting.

But it's what groundsman Bool was expecting: "I think we'll stick to our plans. We're not here to serve up a pitch to suit New Zealand. We're here to serve up a pitch that's going to give us a quality game,".

This type of pitch is great for white ball games.

But more of this and test match crowds at Hagley will go the way of Wellington 7s crowds.
