The 19 byes conceded by Parthiv Patel in second innings equals the worst performance by an Indian wicketkeeper against Australia. Nayan Mongia had also conceded 19 byes at Kolkata in 2000-01.

Patel conceded 26 byes in the match- a new record for an Indian wicketkeeper against Australia. The previous record was on the name of Nayan Mongia who conceded 25 byes in Kolkata match in 2000-01. Overall it was the fourth worst performance by an Indian wicketkeeper.

Patel has now allowed 20 or more byes in a match on three occasions in his short career of 18 Tests, which equals the tally of Farokh Engineer. Now only Nayan Mongia (6) is ahead of Patel for India.
Actually to that 19 you should add another five which is a ball that went throughhim to hit the helmet behind him resulting in another 5 runs !!

Atta boy Parthiv. We know you can beat Mongia at this :notworthy

it's the people who have been great players like Atherton
If I ate corn flakes I'd be choking on them right now... Atherton is hopefully the 2nd most mediocre player I'll ever see playing 50 Tests for England let alone the 115 he ended up with, Hussain takes the number one spot.

Obligatory Thread content: India will get stuffed 2/3-nil depending on how good the wickets are for batting

Wow, and I thought Nayan Mongia was one of India's all time best wicketkeepers, it shows that even he stuffed up a few times, although not as much as Parthiv.

Yes. Mongia played 44 tests and never played after the Kolkata test quoted here.

I strongly, strongly dispute that.

Atherton and Hussain have been crucial to the English side more than almost any other batsman throughout the 1990s. That innings in Johnannesburg is undoubtedly one of the best ever played, and better than anything a lot of truly great players such as Tendulkar have ever come up with.

I also agree word for word with the article posted. Don't walk.

I agree with that. In England's darkest hours, they have needed really dogged streetfighters like Atherton and Hussain to look to for some sign of inspiration or guidance. They might not have been the greatest players in history, but they never backed away from a fight.

thats a ludicrous statment.....atherton was averaging 40 odd right until his 84th test match. quite an achievment for an opener given that he played half his games in england, what was then the most seamer friendly place in the world along with the fact that he played in an era with absolutely no support, often having the additional pressure of holding the batting together, especially as captain.his last 3 series, turned out very poor indeed, and his averaged dropped by nearly 2 runs.
hussain on the other hand was a classic underachiever. its the 'what could have been' that is valid for him. however hussain was definetly worth far more than what his average suggests. he wasnt a flat track bully, his performances on flat tracks suggests that he struggled on them. he played his best innings when england really needed them, certainly that makes up for any average that he may have had.

Whatever it takes!!!
While on the topic of that match at Chennai, I was there on all four days (the stadium is just opposite to my house) and I can honestly tell you that a total of 200+ was extremely gettable there. Of course, the records won't show it but they never show the complete picture. Fact is that most of the tests at Chepauk were played in Feb or March and not many in October. October is pre-season in India and the wicket has seen very little cricket. Therefore, it was flatter than normal and slower than normal as it had not seen the hard sun on it. October is monsoon in Chennai and summer only starts near February. Also, if Gillespie could stay at the wicket, you should surely back Dravid and Co to be able to do the same.

That doesn't change the fact they were the most mediocre 50-Test England players I've seen. The both tried their hardest but neither were good enough to get in a good team, once England progressed into a good team Hussain was more and more outclassed by the guys batting around him. Thorpe who was mentally gone part of the time has a much better average than both of those guys and Stewart even having to keep wicket a lot of the time and getting moved around the order managed to get a better average. Also watching Atherton against Walsh/Ambrose or McGrath was simply embarrassing - hell he was even Vaas' bunny.

If you really believe Hussain has the #1 spot then I have two observations. English cricket sucks big time and it's much worse than I ever thought. Second, your knowledge of cricket is as abysmal as Hussain's technique-free batting. Geez, the guy is still whining even though he is not playing any more.

Obligatory Thread Content: England will never ever be competitive with Australia or India even if they bowl 5 yards outside the leg stump like Hussain, the 'great' captain  asked Giles to do... :) :p

I’d rate both Atherton and Hussain as good Test players, not the most classy, but both averaged over 40 when in their prime (for Hussain that was before he was given the captaincy and had that terrible run).

then you certainly havent been watching ramprakash or hick....and its interesting how butcher is ignored, considering he averages 3 runs lower than the both of them.

he was? last i remember he still maintained the number 4 position. interestingly enough he pretty much outclassed everyone bar thorpe in that series in the WI.

thorpe is undoubtedly a much better batsman than both those players, thorpe himself is another underachiever, worth an average of around 50 at least.
stewart was probably better than hussain and just as good as atherton.

then you certainly dont watch too well...atherton has performed better than most other players in england have against ambrose and walsh
a bunny wouldnt average 56 against the WI in 93-94 and then 41 against them in 95-96

yes he did have problems against mcgrath, but its interesting how stewart gets away with it given that he was shane warnes bunny.

Scaly piscine said:

extremely harsh, he played one series in SL in 01 when he was past his prime and completely out of sorts and happened to get out often against vaas, who at home is quite a capable bowler.

Gillespie had the advantage of not facing the Australian attack.
