I think in Australian conditions you'd want to be increasing the scoring rate after lunch, and "intent" might make some sort of sense. But that's probably less true here as you really wouldn't even think about declaring until much later in the day based on the idea that the pitch will likely deteriorate significantly, and that the series is tied.

Obviously this partnership has been totally fine so it's a moot point at this stage as they've increased the scoring rate without really doing anything too crazy. Given that batting conditions are good though I do think it's reasonable for someone like Wade to look to play his shots rather than just occupying the crease. To a degree that is playing to the match conditions which circumvents the whole problem with the "intent" meme - that it doesn't take circumstances into account.

Lol.. you are the one who finds proper compliments backhanded, coz you are so used to giving only those out to players from other countries. Smith has not yet hit a ball in the air and Maxwell reined himself in to ensure they put a score on the board first before they got fancy. On flat batting tracks like these, that is the biggest challenge any batsman can have.

Don't think I've ever done anything of the sort, like even once in my life.

So what has Rahane done wrong that results in bagging him so much here? Has he captained a lot previously and been poor or something? I feel like he's been fine in this test since Kohli went off. Guess he could have bowled Ashwin a bit earlier and maybe started with a third man rather than putting one in after a couple of boundaries, but I don't think he's been overly defensive or stubborn or any of the usual criticisms of captaincy.

Yeah he's been fine other than those two issues. Not Williamson level poor at the very least.

Hopefully the tail can stick with Smith here. While I don't think we'll blow it as hard with the ball as England did in the last series, I'd be feeling a little disappointed with less than 450.

My thoughts exactly. He seems to have taken a real step up as a batsman this year, but this will all be pretty new to him.
