I've been supporting persisting with him for a while longer, because Gillespie has a history of major lapses of form, and then returning to great form in spectacular fashion. However, there's some real issues with his bowling right now, and I'd definately be looking at including Kasprowicz in the next two tests, and giving Gillespie a chance to earn his place back if he can down the line. I don't think he's looked completely shocking all the time on tour, and The Oval for example where he was very good gave hope that he might be finding touch again, but really he's not done enough to maintain his place, and he shouldn't be in the final tests unless he turns it on in the second innings.BoyBrumby said:Interesting to hear you say that. You've been one of his staunchest advocates so far. I can't really comment, 'cos I've only seen about 40 minutes after lunch & the last hour (so about 2 overs of Dizzy), but I'm guessing with you saying that he's definitely been below par. When does loyalty become intransigence?
I'd say from what little I've seen it's fairly even. The pitch looks a good 'un (a little movement for Lee with the new ball, but nothing excessive) but from what the commentators said (7 chances going down?!?) Oz coulda been well on top. Failure from Fred early doors & I'd say they're in the box seat.
I think you're being a bit negative there from an England point of view too. Even if England get 400, that's a decent score. It's a flat wicket, but Australia will need to make 400 when they bat just to be even, so the runs on the board will put England in front. If they bat well tomorrow and manage 500+, they're very much in the box seat to take the test. A lot riding on the first session tomorrow, I think.
