***Official*** Australia in England (The Ashes)

Terry Alderman has just said on Radio 5 Live that he doesn't think Brett Lee will play on Thursday! More Aussie media rubbish, they'd be mad not to play him!

It would be quite amusing though, just to see Aussie fans pausing to stop baiting the English and going ballistic on their selectors :D

Who is this Rogers guy and how good is he?
He's okay. Opens for WA, probably about 4 or 5 deep in the run for international opening spots with guys like Hussey, Jaques and Maher ahead of him. May have overtaken an aging Elliott now, who will probably never be in contention again.

Sky News is reporting that Gillespie is an injury risk, with "pain behind his right knee" that caused him to miss training. If so, that would certainly ease the selection dilemma for the Australian selectors, and might actually be for the best, since Kasprowicz is a better bet with the old ball than dizzy I think, and his form is less woeful.

If Kaspa misses out - which of the 3 seamers would be change bowler then?
It would have to be Gillespie. In fact, even Gillespie himself has said that Lee should get the new ball if selected. His ability to swing it is vital, and he's capable of picking up early wickets. I'm not sure how suited Gillespie is to bowling first change, but he's going to need to learn if he's picked over Kasprowicz.

 Nice one.

Is it a particularly well-timed injury, I wonder? It allows Oz to field their strongest attack & lets Dizzy keep a bit of face without the ignominy of being dropped.

Mind you, that said he is probably due an injury, isn't he? A fair while since he missed a test.

Does it matter who takes the new ball?

I think that all the Australian bowlers can swing the ball, which I believe will cause the downfall of England in this series. In the Natwest series Final, England were 25-5, with the ball darting around all over the place. A particularly memorable delivery was where Brett Lee clean bowled Strauss with a pitched up delivery that swung through the gate. Furthermore, Trescothick was undone when McGrath pitched up an away-swinging half volley that took the edge.
Thus, my point is that the new-ball pairing for Australia will not hold the key to the series, as I believe that all 4 contenders can take wickets early on against this fragile early-on England upper-order.

It's a fair contention, but I think I'm right in saying that Lee & McGrath shared all 5 of those wickets, so I'd say that suggests fairly strongly they're the right men to have first go of the cherry. Nothwithstanding that they were bowling with the white ball, obviously! As I recall Dizzy's figures were the worst of the Australian front-line bowlers too.

If Lee & McGrath don't manage an early breakthrough I'd say Kasper would be the man I'd most like to turn too next. He swings the ball more than Dizzy seems to manage just now (moves it both ways too) & the angle of his delivery can cause problems for lefties, especially those with iffy footwork. No names, no packdrill. :D

IMO if Gillespie plays he should open the bowling.
Disagree. McGrath obviously has first call on the new cherry, but Lee's effectiveness is for me severely limited to when the ball swings - and the new ball will benefit him much more greatly than it would benefit Gillespie. I wouldn't pick Lee, but if he was in the team, he must take the new ball.
