Barney Rubble
International Coach
Terry Alderman has just said on Radio 5 Live that he doesn't think Brett Lee will play on Thursday! More Aussie media rubbish, they'd be mad not to play him!
I missed that - how bad we used to be!tooextracool said:darren maddy bats at 2 though.
you didn't....Neil Pickup said:You really have to wonder how we won that Test, then...
Result: New Zealand won by 83 runs
Look up his stas on Cricinfo or Baggygreen and see for yourself.honestbharani said:Who is this Rogers guy and how good is he?
He's okay. Opens for WA, probably about 4 or 5 deep in the run for international opening spots with guys like Hussey, Jaques and Maher ahead of him. May have overtaken an aging Elliott now, who will probably never be in contention again.honestbharani said:Who is this Rogers guy and how good is he?
It would have to be Gillespie. In fact, even Gillespie himself has said that Lee should get the new ball if selected. His ability to swing it is vital, and he's capable of picking up early wickets. I'm not sure how suited Gillespie is to bowling first change, but he's going to need to learn if he's picked over Kasprowicz.marc71178 said:If Kaspa misses out - which of the 3 seamers would be change bowler then?
things always seem to go against england before the start of the first ashes test.FaaipDeOiad said:Sky News is reporting that Gillespie is an injury risk, with "pain behind his right knee" that caused him to miss training.

still this is not good news...FaaipDeOiad said:Sky News is reporting that Gillespie is an injury risk, with "pain behind his right knee" that caused him to miss training. If so, that would certainly ease the selection dilemma for the Australian selectors, and might actually be for the best, since Kasprowicz is a better bet with the old ball than dizzy I think, and his form is less woeful.
It's a fair contention, but I think I'm right in saying that Lee & McGrath shared all 5 of those wickets, so I'd say that suggests fairly strongly they're the right men to have first go of the cherry. Nothwithstanding that they were bowling with the white ball, obviously! As I recall Dizzy's figures were the worst of the Australian front-line bowlers too.Hazza said:I think that all the Australian bowlers can swing the ball, which I believe will cause the downfall of England in this series. In the Natwest series Final, England were 25-5, with the ball darting around all over the place. A particularly memorable delivery was where Brett Lee clean bowled Strauss with a pitched up delivery that swung through the gate. Furthermore, Trescothick was undone when McGrath pitched up an away-swinging half volley that took the edge.
Thus, my point is that the new-ball pairing for Australia will not hold the key to the series, as I believe that all 4 contenders can take wickets early on against this fragile early-on England upper-order.
Disagree. McGrath obviously has first call on the new cherry, but Lee's effectiveness is for me severely limited to when the ball swings - and the new ball will benefit him much more greatly than it would benefit Gillespie. I wouldn't pick Lee, but if he was in the team, he must take the new ball.superkingdave said:IMO if Gillespie plays he should open the bowling.
