For me, Finch needs to open.

Jhye didn't do too badly but I feel more comfortable with the other two fast bowlers.
Obviously Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood, Bherendorff and maybe a couple of others should be ahead of these bowlers in the pecking order, but Stanlake looks like he has so much potential. Could be an ATG if he stops hurting himself.
Just goes to show that cutting off your nose to spite your face isn't going to win you games of cricket. How much better does this look:
Finch
Warner
S Marsh
S Smith
Stoinis
Maxwell
Agar
Paine
Tye
K Richardson
Stanlake
Also, Khawaja really should come into consideration. He had fantastic ODD form last season.
That is all fine and well, but just like when England beat Australia in Australia earlier this year, Australia batting has a clear SR problem as against the England team on flat pitches.
Shaun Marsh scored 131(116) sure looks impressive, but it was still below the asking run rate from the innings start, and the RRR got to 10.7 after 40 overs, 8.95 after 30 overs and 8 after 20 overs.
I don't think Paine is right for the team as against Carey for a start based on strike rate. There is definitely still room for accumulators in ODI, but I think Australia needs to build its team to a plan the way Punter rebuilt the t20 team to a plan. Doesn't need to be the same plan, but something coherent at least. I'm not sure what Australian cricket fans think, but I am just not seeing one for the ODI team being demonstrated, not in India on the last tour there, not at home in Australia, and not here now. There has been so much reliance on Finch or Warner scoring big while fast, that even when they have, Australia have still lost.
The Australian ODI cricket teams of late just seem constantly quite ad hoc put together. Stoinis seems to have a different role every game (from specialist bat, to middle order all-rounder, to top order all rounder). Some days the team bats out at 7 (incl Paine), some days at 8. The balance is constantly in flux. Some injured players are irreplacable, like Stokes and Woakes for England, but they try to keep a winning formula with smart adjustments based on the available talent which drops away very fast as they don't have depth in selection. But then they get creative, like squeeze in some Joe Root overs to spare Willey from the death still. Some very smart cricket being shown by their leadership.
